  1. I have the same thoughts. Fallowing the same tactics I have never been able to kill a tank with the GAU I can disable it but a full kill has not happened. Anything lighter than a tank though and it chews it up. Interestingly though looking through youtube videos of the gun employment on an vehicle. There are many videos of the GAU obliterating soft targets like Hummers and light apcs. But virtually none of it "destroying a tank" so I did some further research. While the GAU was designed to penetrate armor the most effective use of the gun is against soft targets facilitating its CAS role with more safty to near by friendly units. further more there are three states of "death" for a tank. Mobility kill: in that you effectively stop it from moving at will on the batttle field . A fire power kill: effectively stopping it from friing its main weapon. A Catastophic kill: destrying the tanks and crews ability to fight. The GAU is designed for the former 2. The tactic is to hit the tank from the rear were the armor is weakest hitting the power plant. or from the side hitting the tracks to disable its movment or a steep dive angle attacking the barrel of the gun. These tactics work... in realife and effectively "kill" the tank. but as you said there is no win state for simply disabling the tank in really any mission I have flown. Would be nice if such a win condition was implemented.. more realistic too.
  2. Thank you for the suggestions every one. I looked at all and in the end suspect Spiddx to be the most likely cause of this issue. Because I can re duplicate it. if I nose down into a dive to attack with guns a bombing run or to find a target then active pause to look at something ( the A-10 is the only plane I active pause in due to how complicated its systems are) I notice when I un pause it is when the shut down happens. I can duplicate it almost every time now. I think what is happening is as Spiddx says the game is still simming G forces and areo dynamics while paused so when I come out of pause the fuel or air starved engines flame out instantly. I had previously ruled out my switches being incorrect the first few times it happened to me as in my panic to relight the engines found I had to reset a lot of things and all switches were in their correct positions. Its funny I have trouble flying the A10c with out the occasion active pause but when it is falling out of the sky with 8000 feat between me and the ground I can invent a restart procedure on the spot, run through it and relite before hitting the ground. And I am using... don't laugh, the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 for my flight stick. I used to have a t.1600m but it failed on me so this was the best replacment I could afford at the time. yes flying the A10c with it is as big a pain in the ass as it sounds hence the keyboard remapping and active pausing.
  3. I would say no.. side note though I didn't even know you could get the Hawg inverted ?
  4. Is there away on the key board to instantly power off the A10 ? like in how you can cheat and instantly hot start the hawg? I asked because `looking through the manual or the button mapping dosent seem to say that there is such a key input. But the real reason I ask is the odd problem I have been experiencing.... while flying the A10 will completely power off, I'm talking electrical and engines gen and battery still run and I get a master alarm but effectively the plane is dead. While I can some times get it restarted ( if I have the height to do so...also it kinda makes me feel like a bad ass restarting this thing while it is falling out of the sky) the problem is becoming annoying. I am wondering if this is my fault. I have alot of stuff mapped to my key board and in the heat of combat maybe hitting said kill switch ? though I do notice it does correlate with me using pause or active pause. So... any suggestions ?
  5. I would recommend the Hornet as a first purchase of a study level air craft. While it is as complex as the Harrier or the A-10c it over all feels far more user friendly than the other two mentioned. at 10=15 hours in the Hornet I was doing case 3 Carrier recoveries. At 30-40 hours in the a-10c I am still very awkward at using this thing as a weapon. Of the 3 I mentioned The Hornet is simply less frustrating. Though take it with a grain of salt as this is a matter of opinion and I may find the a-10c harder to use due to the fact that I do not have a HOTAS that can map even half of the essentials to.
  6. I would recommend turning down some of your other setting. Like grass and ground clutter anything over a setting of 500 is simply over kill since 95% of your time you are never going to see it any way, why let it eat up so much of your resources? your preload radius is also likely to high. I would also say turn FLARE and dirt down to flare only. Turn filtering off in DCS and enable it through Nivida control panel and Vsync as well DCS dson't handle either setting in game very well at all. Also you might try hitting Lalt+ enter. I know it is claimed that this bug is fixed but doing so in my game increases my FPS from 50-60 to 90-100. I have spent a significant amount of time making this sim run great and look good on hardware much weaker than yours and these mentioned above are the biggest FPS killers I have found.
  7. YES! the Harrier dosn't have nearly enough content for it. I play single player because well my computer does not play well with DCS servers not well enough to fly with any one. So hearing that you are making missions for it and on the PG map too! that is just great! When I realized I was going to be investiong a lot of time into DCS I got track IR. While I know it is not VR it works well in a pinch. I also think I would need a substantial upgrade to my PC to VR. My current pc still runs an FX chip set... Don"t laugh !!! it actually runs DCS single player really well maxed out ( cept gras and ground clutter that is at 200) I don't think it is strong enough for VR though.
  8. Wow. thank you both for the detailed information. Especially the info on the tunguska Tholozor. I thought there might be a bug with it since it ignores both chaff and flares( Seriously it induced so much rage that I screamed out loud waking my husband up in the middle of the night) I wish the A-10 manual covered SAM types and how to defeat them. mayhaps there be a Guide on AA and SAM types floating around the forums? Now to Baltic_dragon.... I gotta say I am fangirling out a bit here! your Georgian war campaigne for the f-15c is with out a doubt the best piece of dlc content for DCS! when I got the A-10 I also bought the Enemy within because the Georgian war was so good! it is the primary reason I am trying to come to grips with the A-10 so I can Fly the Enemy with in missions! I really hope you are working on more story campainges...?
  9. Ah thankies, JTAC is now working in missions. I never noticed it before. I am now working on my battle field tactics attacking remaining SAMs with mavricks trying to not over fly the target areas and finally completed the mission sunset serria. Though now I am having a problem with ManPads :/ How do you spot them ? they don't seem to show up even with labels on and have shot you down before you evenn know they are there?
  10. I have voice attack set up for my radio. Does it not work through the \ menu like the other planes ?
  11. My first post in the forums. I am a long time flight sim fan having just recently discovered DCS. I have become some what addicted after dumping 100 hours into the su-25 I now have The persian Gulf map and NTTR flaming cliffs 3 The Hornet The Harrier The A-10c and likely the F-14(when it releases) so that I will have air craft that fit 3 different jobs CAS, CAP and Wild Wiesel roles. Now to the point of this post. I have 200 hours into... training to fly these craft, the systems the munitions and I have a pretty strong grasp on all of them. Landing take off ground attack air to air even AA avoidance. In my training missions that I set up I am Ace. But I have now started trying Both included missions and campanges and user created missions. I have not completed a single one. Namely due to the ridiculous amounts of AA and SAMS that every one Egal dynamics and users pack into their missions. While I am aware that even The best SEAD mission will miss some of these threats( I use the options for SEAD when the tasking is there) It seems like there is still an over abundance of it. The problem is I eventually run out of counter measures BEFORE they run out of shit to shoot at me. So my question there is how does one deal with these in the single player missions this could be for the A-10 or the other planes I mentioned above ( Have the same problem with the Hornet though not nearly as sever as with the A-10) Secondly JATAC and my wing man, In my training missions they work every time. JTAC will give me information and my wing man will attack targets. Step over to a mission and JTAC never responds and my wingman will simply fly around until he gets shot down too. This is fairly specific to the A-10. The Harrier or the Hornet work as intended...mostly. Since it works when I set up a training mission and not when I am flying a pre created one... There has to be something I am missing?
