It is for ranging information so the sight knows the slant range to the target and where ground level is. Please check the manual at page 280-281.

Nice video, however i a m not sure you need the laser unless using guided weapons or am I mistaking ?
I imagine so as well. Unless it is riding a laser beam..there is no point for the laser designator? Unguided rockets like S-5 or S-8 / unguided bombs like the Fab-100s etc don't need the laser IMO.

yup. Just found this happen as well. No explosion sound ... atleast when engaging ground targets.

I also noticed the cockpit glass actually now looks like a glass with internal reflections and shading. Soo cool. It actually now looks like you are seeing through glass. Great job ED.

Damn ED...the EDGE engine is fantastic. I love the bokeh version of the DOF. Looks so beautiful. Perfect screenshot galore. Very nicely done with the smoke/flares etc. The Mig 29 cockpit is fantastic. A few bugs/crashes but all in all....great job. Can't be easy adaptng your huge code base to a totally new platform.

OMG!! If DCS had these..I would be ecstatic. Imagine fluid effects of smoke and fire like that.... Just like how we see explosions and smoke get affected by wind etc. that would be so cool.
ED have truly made something special with the missile smoke in EDGE. I couldn't imagine anything better. Has the nice dynamic fluid motion...the dispersion that I can see in most RL videos. Really looking forward to see where they take the special fx.

np. man... BF3/4 are way overdone with the lens effects. But I think the little bit of dust in ED's screenshots was kinda nice. I will personaly play with it + DOF on.. :P :smartass: as I am a bit of a graphics freak. :p
here is an example of ED's. I guess it would include the lens flare as well. :p

It is a dust effect which was visible in some of the early screenshots. It probably is more for the "gamers" / "media content creators" among us. There was some backlash about it...but I am glad ED are leaving it in as an option.

I think its still being tweaked/examined for DCS 2.0. Still work in progress. This is the big first step...getting the engine integrated with a public (although beta) release of EDGE. :D

Don't be silly. ED are hardly going to commit commercial suicide by releasing an engine and map that won't run smoothly on a 4.8Ghz CPU and Strix 980Ti.
In addition to that, there has been enough mention of a decent performance boost on current rigs with the new engine. I wouldn't be surprised if u can run this at 4k everything maxed with a butter smooth 60+ fps.

How detailed is the RADAR implementation going to be? Is it going to be modelled in exhaustive detail? or is it more the FC3 level ?
In general...Looking good...but there is a few things (maybe I have just been spoilt by ED's / leatherneck / BST level of attention to detail). But when the Radar screen and HUD is turned on...it seems very "game-like"...immediate turn on... Look at ED's aircraft...even the Su-25T..the HUD fades in....the tape rotates to correct position. The Ka50 ABRIS has a startup procedure...not just direct to the screen. I am assuming the Mirage has a similar startup sequence/ animation? Also graphically...can't pinpoint it..but the combiner/the HUD black/grey metal piece under the hud..looks too cartoony..blocky. Might just need a bit of weathering like the sides of the cockpit. But I am sure its part of the WIP status. Looking forward to this aircraft. Finally...a totally new modern jet fighter to fly around in. :)

I must just say....this is freaking incredible. Look at those contrails...the effect even in this screenshot LOOKS AMAZING!!! The propagation and freezing of water vapor has NEVER ever looked that amazing in DCS...or heck even any other game I have seen. Fantastic job. Totally unreal.

Just as an update to this...I found certain ground vehicles are also missing shadows. Notice the vehicle in the front and the player A-10 aircraft here. It is very random. I was trying the Su25T target practice mission. Now with improved visibility ... it is so much better than using labels. Fantastic...but the lack of shadows from the vehicles makes it extremely difficult to pick it out from the ground flat texture. I even made a rocket run against a black texture on the ground thinking it was a vehicle. lol
