hey guys,

today i stumbled upon this link...

"TRACK PLAYBACK PRIOR TO MISSION START (MISSION INTRO)

It's now possible to create missions with a pre-recorded introduction track.

The procedure to create a mission with an intro track is as follows:

1. Create a mission with the necessary triggers, graphical and audio material.

2. Launch the mission, record the intro track and save it.

3. Create a new file, called "continue_track" with the number '1' inside. The file can be created with Notepad or other similar program. The file should have no extension.

4. Open the TRK file with your archive opener (winrar, etc.) and insert the "continue_track" file inside the "track_data" folder of the TRK archive.

5. Rename the TRK extention to MIZ.

As a result you will have a MIZ file that includes a track file inside. When the mission is launched, the track will be played back, after which the player will be handed control automatically. "

i tried it, but so far without much success....

first,if i read it correctly, than after you have done the steps above,....you end up with two missions....

-the actual mission

-and the pseudo mission which actually contains only the track

....right?

so how exactly does one get the track inside the mission?

second thing i dont quite understand...if you save a track, most of the time those tracks are really long..and for an intro, you definitely dont want to have a whole mission recorded, but only a short portion of it, preferably, with the views already adjusted, to look good...

so how can you achieve to actually only use certain parts of a track for an intro?

last questions...does this still work?

and does this work in missions made for multiplayer?

cheers

OMG, this is soooo cool, great find!

I tried that today and it worked. Just follow Sabre's instructions to the letter.

Basically, you take your mission, fly it, save a track of it, and then modify the saved track so it becomes your new mission (with the replay included).

You "just" have to design the mission so that you can fly the intro without firing the triggers/events that the player should later encounter.

Now this brings up some questions, like...

  • Playback doesn't work well for lots of players. I guess any intro recorded this way should take that into account (e.g. avoiding NOE flying where tiny differences in playback could mean crashing into the ground)
  • Changes in flight model, engine dynamics and so on are practically guaranteed to break the recorded intros (which apparently happened to the original BS1 trainings).
  • The player could take control at any time, so the mission should be designed in such a way that it functions regardless of playback or player control

Still, this might make for some very interesting story-telling.

I think the idea is to record a portion of the mission before the player is supposed to take control.

In my test, I performed a landing in a Huey, then quit, saved the track, performed the steps as described by Sabre-TLA and then flew the mission. The mission started with the recorded landing, and when the playback ended, I was in full control of the Huey, there was no loading or stutter or anything. Obviously, some kind of message should tell the player what to do and when exactly to take control.

It would also be nice to have the aircraft on the ground or trimmed for level flight - but I could imagine some very interesting scenarios where it goes like "Okay, I'll show you a low level split-s... oh no... I don't feel so well... take over... NOW! - Hey, rookie, well done, you handled this test quite well. Now head back to base."

and does this work in missions made for multiplayer?

Haven't tested, but I don't think so.

I just can't believe how cool this feature is. Played around some more.

The recording stays intact when the mission is edited later on. I added some text messages and triggers to the mission and removed another unit, the recording still works. Even better, triggers like "Unit inside zone" also work during the playback. And, even better, the trigger event "On Take Control" suddenly makes sense. :)

I've attached my test mission. As I said, it's a flight in the Huey, so if you don't have the Huey module, you probably won't be able to fly the mission, but you can look at the .miz and check out the triggers in the ME.

/me feels like it's my birthday today, this is so cool! :D

The thing is, track files do contain the mission, along with information on the playback.
