Hi guys,

Just bought Flaming Cliffs 3 on Steam and can't seem to get the Russian radars to work at all, even though the F-15 seems fine.

Basically, for the Russian planes nothing shows up on the radar. Ever. It is definitely turned on and I have tried all the different modes. Even sitting 3 miles (or closer!) behind a friendly aircraft, with everything apparently set correctly, I get no return. I can see dots on the HUD for both friendly and enemy aircraft though. I've attached a couple of screens showing the problem.

Is there something blindingly obvious I've missed? I've tried the manual and watching training videos but they don't seem to help.

Another problem, that could be related, is that the vertical scanning mode never locks up anything automatically.

I'm using Windows 8, could this be a problem?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, apologies if I've made a noob error!

Ah, I get it. So it was quite a simple problem after all! Looks like flying Russian is going to be a challenge.

Too many years of Falcon have conditioned me to expect everything to work like an F-16...

Thanks for your help.

Friendly contacts will show up as a double rowed dotted line. Bogeys as a single dotted line. The length of the line depends on the size of the contact. Many smaller contacts close enough together can also AFAIK show up as a single, bigger contact. You don't need to have access to an AWACS in order for contacts to show up in your MFD. If you lock something up, that single contact will show up on your MFD, or if you use TWS mode then all visible contacts will show.

The RWR is also quite a different and analog beast in the ruskie planes. Not as easy to grasp and probably not as good as the american one, but it can certainly be used if you learn how to read it.

Yeah, but sometimes I can't really see the dots clearly but I think that is just me.

I do have one gripe though. You can't have your radar active in NAV mode, which you can in the F15. When I fly the 15 I leave my radar on regardless of my HUD mode. This way I can fly my patrol accurately and still be able to see what is in front of me without having to rely on AWACS or EWR. That is one thing you just cannot do in the 27 and 33. You have to alternate between NAV mode and BVR, just to make sure you stay on course.

It is the one thing that I miss. And that I don't really like the russian TWS mode but that is up to personal preference.

You can however set the auto-pilot to route mode while you scan around. Depending on the situation you should also use the IRST liberally (Infra-Red Search and Track) instead of the radar in order to stay undetected by the enemy. This in combination with the R-27ET missile is a great way of giving a bandit little to no chance to react and defend your missile.

Or you just use your HSI for navigation while using the Radar... Always shows course, track and range to your current WP.

The Su is in advantage over the F15 in many terms, the RWR can't show you exact contact type, but you can read range and relative elevation.

AWACS contacts are shown on the Monitor, so you don't give away your Position by using your own radar and have a advantage in situational awareness. In addition, there is the IRST mentioned by Humbug, which enables completely silent tracking and engaging (with IR missiles), as long as the target is quite hot / you face the engines. Very useful!

Sadly no active radar missiles for the Su, but I still favor it

you don't have to alternate between NAV and BVR all the time.

In NAV mode select your desired heading/waypoint and then switch to BVR.

Your heading and everything else regarding the navigation is available trough HSI.

It doesn't you have to press the lock button while something is in the scan zone.

Cheers.
