There are a couple of missions in Operation Medvedev where it's all out war, and in the chaos I've mistakenly targeted my own tanks. Other than their position and direction of travel, are there any clues that separate friendly tanks from enemy?

Generally, the one not shooting at you should be friendly.

Seriously, though, it can be hard to distinguish them, that's for sure. A few tips:

-carefully check your briefing and mission preparation map. Most units locations are indicated. Once on the battlefield, you'll be able to deduce their side most of the time.

-learn to differentiate NATOs from russian equipement. If it's an Abrams or a Bradley, you can't go wrong.

-use common sense. If the unit in your sight points its canon in the same direction you're heading for, chances are, they're looking for the same targets.

-Common sense episode two: if the canon is pointed towards you, you're probably the target. It does not mean they are currently targetting you, just that they are surely confronting the opposite direction (yours).

Don't worry, this is a problem real pilots have too. If you know what hardware your side is operating, and that is different than the enemy is operating, you can use visual ID (if you keep your resolution high enough to be able to see the actual shape in the shkval, that is)

Otherwise, no. You have to rely on knowledge of where your units started and where their goals were to determine friend or foe.

IRL, you would have a FAC, AFAC, or JTAC to coordinate your activities with the units on the ground, (not to mention a pair of mk-1 eyeballs with much better resolution than your monitor)

For cases like this, I have my labels set so that when i turn them on, all i get is a colored apostrophe or asterisk. Thus in the event that i really don't know which of two lines of tanks i am supposed to kill, i can blip the labels on and off to see who's who.

All units starting postitions in the mission is also visible on the ABRIS. Just remember that you own side is always red, even though if you are on blue coalition.

Edit: It helps switching to the map mode without the terrain to more easily see the units. Also, there are mostly also pre-planned TGT points in you PVI and ABRIS that you can target and safely attack.
