Hi Im by no means new around here. Been lurking for a long while, currently own DCS: A10C, MustangP51D, DCS: Huey, DCS: Mi8 Hip and just a few days ago I bought FC3 in preparation for the 1.2.8 patch and the F15 AFM.

Ive never flown any of the Lock on or Flaming Cliffs planes before and never planned to but the new AFM model is too intriguing to miss. My question is twofold:

First, where do I start? The training videos are horribly grainy and old, not to mention they seem to be out of sync (video and text) so they are incredibly hard to follow.

Id like to get to grips with basic aeorplane handling, a basic start from ramp or runway freeflight mission would be ideal. Are there any available for download? There are a number of advanced videos for the eagle on youtube but really there is nothing for a brand new user.

Im used to the added complexity of the other modules, so I wont take too long to get to grips with the F15C, but is there a nice checklist or keyboard shortcut list in .pdf to download somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Read the F-15 section in the FC3 manual. It's located in the "Eagle Dynamics / Documentation / User Manual" folder (or something like that) I think.

It is pretty good - updated to the newer cockpit etc.. and walks through some scenarios using the radar, different missile types, explains HUD symbology etc..

Once you walk through the manual play in free-flight (ie. quick mission or generate a mission with the F-15 with one or two bandits) and mess around with the manual in front of you.

Once you get comfortable with mode switching, radar modes you do and don't need, manipulating the scan ranges, locking targets etc... you can reference youtube for 'techniques' like using radar notch to evade, etc...

One last thing. The biggest benefit I found to familiarize myself was defining my controls and mapping to my HOTAS. Even if you don't have a HOTAS remapping common keys and just familiarization will go along way to learning the aircraft.

I do wish they had interactive F-15 training missions..... they are so much better than reading then trying, but in the end you'll pick it up.

Thanks for that reply.

Ive already traveresed the significant amount of literature, and training videos with regards to avionics and radar modes available to the Eagle pilot as well as BVR tactics. There are very good tutorial videos on those subjects on youtube which Ive seen but Im looking for something more basic.

Im going to take your suggestion and mess around with the editor and quick mission, and remap the keys to my HOTAS.

Having the manual in front of me is going to be tricky due to not having a printer, but Alt+Tab should do the trick, at least initially.

I will wait for the 1.2.8. patch before getting in the cockpit. I dont want to pick up bad habits which will be harder to correct once the proper AFM is released.

I completely agree that the F-15C could use some good walk through training missions. Learning the radar modes and capabilities is fairly daunting and while the videos are OK, they aren't as good as sitting in the cockpit..

I'm getting ito F-15C from A-10C also. I have found that the biggest help for systems is trying out HOTAS mappings. I used to think it would be cool to just read all the radar functions and pick HOTAS assignments all at once. But, the more I play in Free Flight, i just move the HOTAS ctrl buttons and think Gee it would be cool if it did this.. And then I go map it. Kinda like a bottom-up usability exercise.

I just got the f15 and did the same. I started with the control setup I made a long time ago for the su-25, and jut change 1 or 2 things at a time a I get used to it. As far as ramp start- right-alt+home, and right-shift+home to start engines, left-control+c to close canopy and you're done. It's really that simplified. And you can start both engines almost at the same time. That's the part that they missed by just changing the flight model without adding a clickable cockpit.

I went to my closest social office and printed out those 150 pages :) Well worth it :D When I get my HOTAS (x55) completed I would like to share my profile and hopefully I will get some feedback to maybe learn some more :) Im about halfway or so trough the manual and my HOTAS is close to ready..

There could be some better basic tutorials out there though. There are some few issues Im having a hard time with such as different sensors imputs that the manual doesnt cover..

EDIT: One thing I dont seem to get is the Radar Pulse Repeat Frequency Select (RShift+I). In the manual it says ''. You can cycle between HI, MED, and interleaved by pressing [RShift + I]''. Once I hit this key I can swap between HI or MED frequency, but it wont change back to interleaved no matter how many times I hit it or how long I wait between each commands. This is while in BVR mode..

Nor does it say anything clear about the RWR/SPO Mode Select (RShitf+R) which only seems to turn off the or deactivate the TEWS? Im trying to learn as much as possible and gather most of the needed information by myself then come up with a list that I really need help with in the end, but this is just an example. Really should have some kind of ingame tutorials that goes in dept with the different systems..

Interleaved in the F-15 is displayed as alternated between HI and MED. You won't get INT or whatever it says in the Russian planes.

RWR mode select selects between show all emitters and showing only high threat emitters (anything locking on to you). This is good for decluttering the RWR when you have many passive radars and need to pick out a hostile radar. It has some obvious downsides though.

Awaiting: DCS F-15C
