I love this! Wish I could participate, but the ol' hand is still FUBAR. One thing: I recommend using Teamspeak instead of Ventrilo. I believe the former uses up less ping than the latter; at any rate, more people I know use TS3 than use Vent.

I really need to get online with others to learn how to dogfight this thing properly. Playing AI p51 or FW190s just isn't doing it. Love to sign up and be cannon fodder for someone but my wife has a interview out of town so we're going to check the area.

Don't lose heart, Starkey.

If we want the tournament to be successful, several things need to happen first.

1) Build a proper online community

Most people flying the P-51 rarely fly it online, if ever. It's more of an on-and-off kind of thing. I know many people who have the module just sitting in their closet gathering dust. Very few people come online regularly for a quick fly because they have no incentive to do so. Someone once told me: "Nobody's online because they see nobody online. Therefore, there's nobody online because nobody's online. Go figure..." It's a vicious cycle. Creating interest for online play can only be done by bringing your own buddies online and make them see for themselves. I brought a couple of guys who hadn't flown the P-51D in months (or years), and flying with someone you know or someone you can actually communicate with makes all the difference.

2) Create online coop events that will give pilots confidence in their skills

The scariest thing for me in the P-51 was the idea of flying against human players. I dreaded it. I didn't want to get shot down in flames the second I spawned in and just rage quit. Fortunately enough, I was lucky enough to meet interesting people online who "forced" me to give it a second thought and try it. It's much more fun when you have a wingman, and it makes the experience that much less intimidating. Fighting together against a common AI enemy is much less stressful, and these kind of missions will (IMHO) help people find the P-51 much more accessible.

3) Involve the community and make them fly together

I think of flight simulators as not only a "game" (it's much more than that), but also as a social experience. For me, flying online is the true way to fly this sim, it really is. The excitement I have and the enjoyment DCS gives me is not from shooting down AI or player aircraft... it is by flying with people and getting to know your fellow virtual pilots. Formation flying, coordinated operations, formation takeoff... That's where the real fun's at.

4) Create proper tutorials for online combat

I'm thinking of creating a series of videos and pdf files to show how to operate the P-51D for various mission types. Something really simple, straightforward and to the point. Basically, it'd be tutorials to know the bare minimum in order to start the aircraft, takeoff, land, and use the weaponry available to you (rockets, bombs, drop tanks) and how not to blow your engine.

5) Get 1.2.8 to fix performance issues

Once we get better performance, I guess more people will want to give the P-51 another shot. The only thing that annoys me at the moment is the big stutter that happens when I see external tracers and when I see planes catch fire (the smoke just makes my framerate commit a slow hara-kiri).

Once all that is done, I guess creating online tournaments will be much, much easier.

1) Build a proper online community

kind of hard to do when there aren't any p51 squadrons or the p51 module is the odd one out in the existing squadron.

2) Create online coop events that will give pilots confidence in their skills

flying and fighting together can be fun. But fighting against another human crewed P51? a little too chaotic. And then there's the factor where you starting to long for something a little different (like an fw 190D :music_whistling:)

3)Involve the community and make them fly together

squadrons and servers like virtual aerobatics; need I say more?

4) Create proper tutorials for online combat

easier said then done as people will need to build up their skills first.

5)Get 1.2.8 to fix performance issues

unfortunately its about bit more then just fixing performance issues. Currently you can do 3 things with the p51 module. Aerobatics, ground attack and just plain sightseeing on a map where it doesn't really belong. And with something like an 'real' opponnent missing.....

ah who knows, I hope Luthier comes through in the fall..

Well I can only speak for myself..I had a site called Air Combat League which was for A2A combat..with Tournament cash prizes ..once tournament was over no one challenged anyone again...Flankerator runs a site Situation Awareness..similar..wish the best of luck to him..good friend..:thumbup:did well for awhile but after time ...no interest ...to continue it any further...good luck...

I know there are some P-51 pilots on here! We need to do a tournament to help get the community going.

Recruiting for Aerobatic Team/Fighter Group...

Hoped on an empty WWII server the other day for the first time. I started out as the only person on it but after a while there was about 5 of us messing around on it. The current flight model for the FW190 is a big deterrent (feel like I'm shooting a Tiger tank sometimes) but should be resolved whenever the Dora arrives. I think once we finally get the Dora the online and DCS community will grow. FW190vsP51 tournaments in single or squad combat should be a blast.

A big problem to me with having the P51 is it doesn't really belong in the timeframe DCS has it in. When DCS WWII comes out that should be a great starting point with them hopefully adding more locations(Germany/Italy/Africa/Eastern Front) and time period vehicles(tanks/AA/trains).

you should watch my video on the Dora. The only thing the Dora has on you is climb, and you can counter it by staying fast. The real issue IMO is the damage model of the Dora. It just soaks up bullets. You have to either kill the pilot, set it on fire, or take off a wing to bring it down.

I should of stated DM instead of FM because yes its very possible to get the FW190 in your sights but very different thing to bring it down. It took me 187 bullets to get one to land yesterday and a total of 304 before he was destroyed.

I watched your video which was great and I'll PM you soon so we can fly.
