So what are the basics of the navigation?

 

I understand how to use the radio equipment to find airbases and friendly areas. Do I also use the radio to find the dudes who need rescuing? Or, do I just have to navigate using the map and my distance measuring thing?

Hello, Slazi! You have to navigate using F10 map via Multiplayer. This not an easy task. So I have a proposition:

 

 

2 ALL - Let's first do a VFR planing and flying lesson via DCSW Multiplayer. :thumbup:

 

The main points of this VFR training classes:

- how to use a F10 map via Multiplayer for flight planing and navigation;

- how to quickly find the L/L coordinates (latitude and longitude);

- how to calculate a navigation course with Magnetic Variation;

- how to find a visual reference points to VFR flight via DCSW environment;

- how to set up the entire Mi-8MTV2 navigation avionics including Doppler device for VFR flight;

- how to safely land on unprepared landing area (SAR LZ);

- how to use F7 Embarking/Disembarking menu;

- how to fly with maximum speed.

 

We could make this lessons, exchange all our navigation and flying knowledge and experience and than make competition and/or even formation supply flight with cargo to any place :thumbup:.

Hey Airwar. Sounds like a great plan, but I'm not sure my schedule is going to allow for it this week. I'm pretty busy with work, side projects, and the wife. Perhaps this is something we can do some time after the event?

BTW I'm running Standard 1.2.8.27203, or should I install the BETA DCS 1.2.8.27529 since there are a few good Mi-8 fixes...

Hi here is a simple navigation mission using VFR for you to try. If you can manage to do this then you should have no issues when we do the competition:)

Basic map reading skills and the radio to contact ATC are all you need oh and a pen and paper for jotting down co-ordinates while en route to the general area:thumbup:

Ok I get how to see coordinates on F10 map but how do I make a flight plan and how do I get degrees on compass to head toward coordinates?

Unfortunately I don't have video yet but there are some nice guides about the doppler navigation system. I learned from these:

So as to make easier the calculations I've made a simple excel table where you need to put in only the distances and directions of waypoints from the initial point as you read from the map. The table returns the distances and the magnetic directions from waypoints to waypoints. Of course it works only when you know the waypoints in advance.

Ok figured it out... needed to switch RADIO/ICS switch to Radio... then I was able to get azimuth and inbound request successfully navigated to Hospital thank you. I will try more tomorrow. I realize I should go straight to crash site an then head back to hospital.

The competition that Airwar is planning gives you a grid ref. If I used Doppler to navigate I may miss the lz but if I use vfr and follow landmarks rivers, roads etc I am more confident that I know where I am going and know when I am there.

Ok, we (Zulumike, Gate-5 and me) made MP flight first time!!! But during Disembarking DCSW crushed ))) Anyway we made it!!!

 

P.S. I think we will use OPEN BETA for MP Flight!!!

Sorry, I was unsable to join after that. Perhaps we can do a server test at some point before trying again? I think the connection problems were due to having to download such a big map?
