Buckeye Posted July 15, 2014 Author Posted July 15, 2014 Just had my first 2 v 2 practice on the Guns n Roses server with a guy I was in TS with, and wow that was a hell of a lot of fun. I feel like now that I have been able to get on MP for an hour or two each day for the past couple of days, I am slowly getting better. I have been able to identify many of my weaknesses: I need a much improved feel for flying a level turn when looking behind me, expanding on that I need the same improvement for holding corner speed in a turn while holding level, I need to learn when not to chase someone down to the dirt (or when not to chase so much in general) and I need to get better at identifying when I am closing too fast/when they are trying to force on overshoot. These are all things I will be focusing on improving as quickly as possible with experience. Stuge Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I'm glad you're enjoying it Ace! About 2-ship operations.. I have not explored that aspect in-depth. Hopefully more in the future. The idea of a "two-ship death machine" working flawlessly is very intriguing, i have thought about it many times. It would require the right person to train and fly with... Last thing, i wanna make a comment on corner speed in the f-15. I think it is given too much emphasis, and people often seem to have the idea that flying perfect corner speed will magically win the fight. Granted, corner speed is most energy efficient. But it comes with problems: 1) it is challenging enough to maintain even in a horizontal turn, airspeed can easily go too high. 2) if there is any oblique or vertical maneuvering, it gets much more problematic to maintain well, without going too fast. The f-15 turns quite well even at 250kts. Bleeding out some airspeed is not such a sin as some people make it out to be... it is often a better option than overspeeding and blacking out. http://www.104thphoenix.com
GGTharos Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 That's right. Corner speed is good to know, it's good to use, but what you need is to maneuver relative to your opponent. If you just fly corner you might not do so well. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Buckeye Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Might be time to look into investing the time to set up some BMS controls and focusing on flying over there more often...if the 104th is dead (it has been tonight) and the Hoggit server is running a non-fighter mission (which is has been as of about 2 hours ago) I pretty much have no where to fly in MP. I've wasted 2 hours looking for somewhere to fly with something to shoot down, to no avail. Buckeye Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Hmm weird. Most times the server is full. What time did you try to join the server? It was from about 9 to 11:30pm EST by the time I just called it a night and went to bed. Two possible things here ... you have some mod that Integrity check is not appreciating or ... it's a temporary internet issue. Indeed I did, when I saw it open I figured I would try there too...no such luck. Only mod I've changed recently is updating Mustang's Cloud and Sky textures to 5.29. When I get home from work tonight I will have to mess with removing all mods to see if it solves the issue. poor connection. Shouldn't be that. It's not a super connection, but it's not bad by any means? Buckeye Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 5 hours of troubleshooting and one fresh install later (plus a few mistakes along the way), and I am back online. Finally able to get into the 104th too. Question: If a bandit is flying in the dirt, is it worthless to fire 120's at him? 3 times now I am on a bandit in controlled offensive position (saw him first, fired first) and they just dive to the dirt and no matter how many 120's I fire, none connect...even when I am firing from 4-8nm range. Not worthless, just a high chance of miss. But since you can carry 8, chances are you will get the bad guy with one of them. Don't fire all at once if the bandit is evasive. One at a time.. while he has to evade, you can force the distance smaller. If you have sparrows, you could try a flood mode shot. Then prepare to use aim9(if you're carrying) and gun if range becomes small. If you suspect the bandit may get away, switch radar off, track him visually, make him feel safe, and if you see he obviously turns back, mad dog or two :D http://www.104thphoenix.com
Buckeye Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 If he's flying away from you, and low , then 8 nm might as well be 8 light years. Again (in general), watch the tacview to see what happened. Your missiles probably ran out of steam. I know, but unfortunately my TacView wasn't recording my flights after the fresh install. Not worthless, just a high chance of miss. But since you can carry 8, chances are you will get the bad guy with one of them. Don't fire all at once if the bandit is evasive. I'm always cautious not to lob a bunch of 120's off in rapid succession because I figure if he can dodge the first one, even if I fire a couple more they are still coming from the same angle and he can dodge/notch those too. I usually try to alter my position relative to his maneuver, then fire another. In the scenario I described where they were all in the dirt, I ultimately screwed up bc I lost my SA and ended up getting myself in the middle of 3 of them (after firing multiple missiles and ultimately running out). I got into guns position on one and was closing, then bam, his buddy cleaned me up. After I made the post it turned dark outside and people were then forced to fly high...when they kept altitude I ended up taking 5 or 6 guys out. Having TacViews of everything will help too. Buckeye Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 What are the best steps to take to avoid being teamkilled by morons on your team? Obviously calling out buddy spike, etc., but if they aren't in TS (or reading the chat), that doesn't help. What can I do to make it as obvious as possible that "Hey I'm on your team"? When heading back to base, I put on nav lights, I turned radar on so IFF works. Reason I ask is that it seems like 50% of the time I've been shot down, it's been by a damn teammate. This morning I got on a nice run, took out 4 bandits, was heading back to the airbase to land and rearm...and boom, teammate shoots me down despite calling "buddy spike" in the chat. Bushmanni Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 If you get shot down by a radar missile while there's nobody else around there's nothing else to do but teach him how to tell friend from foe on the radar screen and HUD. If you get shot down while dogfighting with an enemy then you need to tell them to not shoot Slammers into the merge. If he shoots you down with a heater then you need to tell him to use radar to check the identity of the target before firing.
