SB116 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Trying to decide between the two prop planes the Mustang and the Dora. Does any of the plane have any missions or campaigns? I remember the Mustang only having training and I think 1 simple dogfight mission. Has this been updated? Does the Dora have more missions, perhaps even a campaign? Is there any plans for more missions for the Dora? I'm aware of the user made missions, which there ofc is more of for the Mustang, since the Dora was just released.
PE_Tigar Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Mustang has training curriculum, missions and a "challenge campaign", Dora has only instant missions, but it's still beta...
Roadrunner Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 i would suggest you fly the TF-51D and see if the mustang is something for you anyway (if you havent done already). if you feel, that having guns, rockets and bombs on this aircraft is just the big thing you miss, then get the mustang, else i say test out the dora, it is a lot of fun to fly, just like the mustang, but feels like having more power in my opinion ;) regards, RR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "There's nothing to be gained by second guessing yourself. Sceptre Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 If you want to buy a DCS: WW2 plane purely for singleplayer combat and dogfighting, you should wait until the WW2 map is released, by then there might be more to to. However, you can fight on multiplayer which is great fun at the moment :) On a side note, the Mustang is complete and the Dora is not and is still in beta, so keep that in mind. SB116 Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Has there been said anything about future official missions/campaigns for the Dora? Is the TF-51D as advanced as the pay version, just missing weapons?
bart Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Is the TF-51D as advanced as the pay version, just missing weapons? The pay for version has weapons, gun sight, seat armour and an extra fuel tank where the jump seat is in the free version. I believe the Advanced Flight Model is the same on both versions, so the free version is a really fantastic introduction to DCS world and the more complex flight models available to purchase. A great idea I think by DCS to very kindly offer the TF-51D as part of DCS World. Raven Morpheus Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) Personally, if I were to buy a new module, I'd buy the P-51. But then I'm a sucker for American planes (my favourite based on my experience in IL2 1946 being the F4U-1D). I don't know how the Germans flew most of their planes - most of them seem to lack axis trim from my knowledge of them in IL2 1946!! But as others have said it might be best to wait a while (months? A year?), especially if there is a WWII map coming. I know a Spitfire IX is planned, along with another WWII bird. Seen it mentioned in another thread around here (my thread about the recent Dora patch). I certainly am waiting because of framerate issues I have with DCS World in general, but specifically when flying the KA-50/UH-1H (they're all I currently use DCS for really), I'm not buying more modules until either I can upgrade my PC or they get resolved by the game itself. But yeah go for the P-51, I did try the TF-51D the other day in a blank Mission Editor mission out of Batumi because I was a bit bored but didn't fancy getting in the UH-1H or KA-50, and once I'd seen a youtube video on how to take off properly (I kept crashing) and done it myself I was quite "excited". VincentLaw Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 If you want them just for free flying around, then get the FW-190 since you essentially already have a P-51. If you want it for combat, I would recommend getting the P-51. The FW-190 has terrible takeoff and landing visibility, is more difficult to steer on the ground, has larger cockpit frames, and the gun sight is not as good. Overall, the P-51 is more of a pleasure to fly, even though it is slightly less powerful. Tip for both planes: It is easier to land and takeoff with fully retracted flaps. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
NeilWillis Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 A simple exclamation of JOY! No pictures, no tracks attached, just these words from someone really having a great time with this superb DCS module. I am going through offline and online experiences that are turning me into a true fan of the Dora, and concentrating more & more in this sim. The "furball" mission that comes with the Dora is a true must play! Give it a try and make sure you use the right tactics for the Fw190. Never get slow / enter prolonged turning dogfight!!! Search for altitude / speed advantage - it can get it at your will provided you fly it correctly! Zoom & Boom techniques allowed me to score high in that furball mission, but it took me a lot of time to shoot down only 4 p51s Online, I have been at the DoW server a couple of times, but apart from some friends at the airfield, and after climbing to cruise, I never saw the enemy :-/, nor did it see me ... But that's the old problem with being able to find the others around in DCS :-) For all of those in the fence, go ahead and take the plunge!!! You wont regret! But the trouble is, the P-51D is also a superb model. I couldn't choose, I had to have both!

I don't find the visibility to be an issue and takeoff is cake, but landing can be a trick. If you want to do it with no flaps, though, you're going to have to set it up well as it's realllllly hard to get her to shed energy on final without the flaps. You can crab it in, of course, but without any way to switch to manual prop pitch to help bleed airspeed it's tough to get her to slow down without using a ton of runway. Of course, we HAVE plenty of runway, but still... I doubt we'll have jet-length runways whenever we get a real '44 map. I like the power of the Dora and LOVE the model (visual, flight, all of it...), but you really need both it and the P-51. :) PC - 3900X - Asus Crosshair Hero VIII - NZXT Kraken 63 - 32 GB RAM - 2080ti - SB X-Fi Titanium PCIe - Alienware UW - Windows 10 Sim hardware - Warthog throttle - VKB Gunfighter III - CH Quadrant - Slaw Device Pedals - Obutto R3volution pit - HP Reverb G2 - 2X AuraSound shakers
