Archer7 Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Move me if I'm in the wrong place. I’ve never enjoyed vehicle simulation games but now I’m a bit curious about military vehicles specifically. When it comes to flight I’m considering going all-in with DCS because it seems to be the cutting edge in the industry however I also ought to get an understanding of the alternatives. I’ve (obviously) heard of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X and X-plane. Microsoft’s seems to have numerous military addons and some even seemed to have interactive cockpits too! It’s the one DCS feature I’m the most interested in. As a gamer I’ve been flying this and that from paper planes to spaceships since always but I’ve never had to understand as much of the machinery as in DCS interactive cockpits. But I’m suspecting Microsoft can’t offer anywhere near as good military scenarios as DCS? Since it mainly seems to be a civilian sim I assume there may not be enemies and such and it’s all about the flying really? And how are the graphics? As for X-plane I don’t believe I’ve seen any military content for it. Does it exist and how is X-plane different from Microsoft’s sim? I’ve also heard of IL-2 Sturmovik which I only now notice is an entire series it seems. WWII, nice graphics… how many aircraft and how detailed is it though? I’ve believe I’ve heard there are very many aircraft for some version of it but just how detailed are they? Interactive cockpits anywhere? Any other significant flight sims? Also as a parenthesis I’m interested in other military vehicle sims too but there doesn’t seem to be too many. Steel Beasts for tanks and a few different for submarines, it seems? Oh and I’ve also seen that “anti-flight” sim, SAMSIM… a very funny idea though I haven’t really got into it.
cichlidfan Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Discussing other Flight Sims, aside from News postings, on this forum is frowned upon. I would recommend a general purpose forum like SimHQ. Flagrum Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Mmmkay... not even in the chit-chat huh? A sunny day, you are sitting in a cafe with some friends and your girlfriend is with you, too. You watch the people pass by on the street. You talk about your day at work, the weather, the latest soccer results. But then you notice a tall blonde - considerably "bigger" than what your girlfriend has got. You: "Hey, Steve, look at her - that are some nice big boobs!" "Yeah, even bigger than those of your GF *g*" GF: "..." A brunette comes in and looks for an empty table. "Heh, Steve, there, that is what I call an ass!" "Hrhr, oh boy!" GF: "......" Now, what do you think, how the story will end? ;o)
Flying Penguin Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Well if you are considering civil flight sims, Prepar3D is very much worth consideration. It's a derivative of ESP (the commercial version of FSX) and is still under active development, unlike FSX. It's a bit more expensive (though academic licences are available), but being FSX/ESP derived, most FSX addons are compatible in some form (whether by a bit of tweaking or they explicitly support P3D) and if you have a modern PC it makes much better use of the graphics card. There's honestly not that much to choose between FSX/P3D and X-Plane, they are both great, but there is more top quality payware for FSX/P3D than X-Plane (A2A Simulations, ORBX, RealAir, Majestic, PMDG being the ones that immediately spring to mind). There are freeware options for both but none come close to the top payware, so expect to spend some serious $$$ on addons. Neither X-Plane nor FSX with TacPac come close to touching DCS for military simming, but they are heads and shoulders above DCS for civil simming. Now, what do you think, how the story will end? ;o) Well... I'm only searching for other sims to see what sort of variation they can offer outside of what DCS is doing and if they're simulating the same aircraft as DCS at best compare them in which case I doubt any simulator has bigger boobs than DCS especially with 2.0. Variation is the key word. I doubt any other simulator can compete with the ASM modules of DCS but I don’t know so that’s why I’m asking.

Talk to your friends at the cafe about variation in regards to women while your GF is sitting next to you. :D No, I get it, seriously, but I can see the point of ED and the forum mods here. Such discussion easily evolve into "what sim is better and why X, Y or DCS sucks" and we have already enough topics to fight over just within our sim.
