Hi guys!

 

My computer begs for an upgrade for a some time now and I want to fly the MiG-21 very badly, so I decided to spend few bucks on a cheapest possible upgrade.

 

Old configuration:

 

Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 - 3Ghz

GeForce 9600GT - 512MB (ddr3)

4GB RAM (ddr2)

 

 

New configuration:

 

Xeon X5460 - 4 cores at 3.16Ghz

NVidia GTX650 - 2GB / ddr5

8GB RAM (ddr2)

 

I had to modify CPU socket from lga775 to lga771 and new processor is working like it should. The only thing is that the temperature is a little to high. Maximum temperature allowed is around 70 degrees Celsius and I get 80+ (when playing DCS). The heatsink is installed correctly but it's a stock Intel heatsink E18764-001. The thermal paste I used is Arctic MX-2.

 

My PC is running normal (no freezes or restarts). I installed few programs to monitor CPU temp. and noticed that there are some differences in readings. All (CPUID HWMonitor, RealTemp, CoreTemp...) shows some 15 degrees more than SpeedFan so I thought that SpeedFan is wrong. But when I go to BIOS, under CPU DIE/PACKAGE TEMP - PROCHOT i get reading close to the SpeedFan's. And that's that 15 degrees over the limit. Second thing is that in BIOS my fan speed is around 880 rpm (I think it's low) and I can't get the fan to work faster, but it's strange that CPU is probably overheating and fan is doing nothing about it. So I'm suspicious is the CPU overheating at all.

 

So my questions are:

 

1. is it possible to have false reading of the CPU temp. in 4 different programs (and correct in only one)?

 

2. in BIOS - is "CPU DIE/PACKAGE TEMP - PROCHOT" CPU temperature?

 

3. Should I experience system instability like freezes and restarts or shut-downs before CPU gets damaged?

 

I was thinking about new heatsink but I very low on a budget right now. Maybe Arctic Freezer 7 pro or something in that class.

 

Any answer is appreciated, and thanks for your time!

I learned one trick how to check what reading is correct

 

Downclock the CPU as much as it can and if you can set the CPU fan manually set it to max speed, let it sit IDLE for a few minutes to have all the heat go away as much as possible... at this state the CPU temperature should be as low as it can get and it should be only few degrees over your room temperature... if you see large temperature difference in some program, that one is wrong, if you see lower tempreature reading than room temperature, that one is wrong too ;) With some programs you can calibrate reading (and you do this at idle CPU) so should do that also.

E8400: TDP = 65W

X5460: TDP = 120W

 

I'd say it is quite logical it is overheating if you did not switch cooler. Stock heatsink E18764-001 is not designed to cool down such a beast...

@Kuky - I don't have any experience or software for downclocking or overclocking. Also, I can't manually set the fan speed (to set it to maximum). Is there an option in BIOS to see temperature of the cores or just the package?

 

Everything you said makes sense. Obviously I have to buy another cooler.

I hope you microcoded your MB BIOS. Of course for OC you must have a better cooler. I did the same with my E5450, and OC him to 3,7GHz. In addition, I suggest you - forwarded DCS to the core 3 and 4. Look at this topic (#30).

Couldn't agree more. Actually never liked overclocking my CPU always had it at stock frequency 3.16Mhz. But now decided give it a try.

 

Sooo.. made a small investment and bought one of those :

After a few youtube videos and overclock forums here the results :

Having this setup up for 2 days now and looks rock stable :thumbup:

Now I am just waiting for the LN FPS fix, EDGE and hopefully the skylake won't take much longer...

 

EDIT : got 5-10 FPS increase in the sim.

When you overclock the CPU, you have to run Prime95 few hours to test the stability.

 

 

I'm not sure why everyone recommends to do this? Why stress your chip unnecessarily? I just use it and if it's not stable I crank it down a notch. Maybe if you are doing things that are really important for national security and people will die if you crash, but for getting a little better performance for games I don't see the point.

6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

Some sadomasochists claim an overclock isn't stable unless you can torture for 24 hours straight but if your CPU doesn't even break a sweat during gaming I don't see the point either.

Because it's absolute necessary to not corrupt or damage your files and program (windows, etc) over time. It's not a claim, it's a fact. Want to re-install Windows?

Your overclock should be stable for the same amount of time as you play your game. I mean, few hours.

And it's not about the security, your internet security (antivirus) take care of that.

 

It's easy, let it run and eat a pizza :D I hope this will help.
