SkateZilla Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 is 32 GB of Ram really needed? that's like $300 more than you need to spend. I have a System at work with 32 GB and it's never used more than 12, So the remainder of the space was used for a RamDISK. Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
Ashstomper Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) may i ask what exactly died in your pc? can't be everything at once, i guess. I'm pretty sure it's something on the mobo. I did a thorough cleaning last Thursday and it hasn't been right since. Random reboots, random blue screens that sometimes just lock lock up and stays displayed other times it blue screens fully crashes then reboots. Can't even reinstall Windows because it just locks up at random points during install. I've even switched the bios (have 3) but no luck. i bet his mobo!!! I think you're right. Been a solid machine until I decided to clean it out. I'm thinking dust and maybe static might have shorted something. I need to look at the capacitors too. Yep! Your "old" configuration is still powerful (socket 1155). Except the defective component. How is the SSD? I'm sure the SSD is ok since it does the same thing with the ssd or my spinner drive in or out. I was not planning a major build for another year or two, but I have no computer to fly with right now. And I had just received my Cougar MFD's That's when I decided to clean things out. Haven't been able to use my MFD's yet :/ I live in a 160 year old dusty house. is 32 GB of Ram really needed? that's like $300 more than you need to spend. I have a System at work with 32 GB and it's never used more than 12, So the remainder of the space was used for a RamDISK. My thoughts on 32 GB of RAM is that at 8GB I was getting out of memory errors if I tabbed out of DCS to an open browser. Plus DCS has a lot of resources to load and seems ram intensive. I was thinking about giving it all the ram I could and let it load everything it wants into ram then it would all be there in memory and perform very well like a ram disk. A RAM disk may be redundant with an ssd. but that's what I was thinking. The main reason I was looking at the latest hardware is I have a employee computer purchase program at work which I can spend up to $2500 and pay it back over 2.5 years at around $30-$40 a paycheck right off the top. It's a great program and I won't miss the money of the top of my check. I thoroughly intended to starts OC'ing my current rig to squeeze more out of it which is like an upgrade in itself. But then GPU's are now PCIe 3.0 and my mobo is 2.0. There is only so much testing I'm able to do so it's been a process of elimination but the failures are random and at random times. Swapped ram sticks, changed ram slots, unplug everything usb except KB & mouse etc. And then there's the EDGE question of how will my current rig would perform, the question of muti-core support and so on. I've been building gaming rigs for years, but after I build one I don't keep up with the current trends in hardware until I need to build another one. Once I have a new rig, I can focus on deeper trouble-shooting and with luck I can use the broken rig as a dedicated DCS server if I can get it fixed. I don't have the cash to buy one piece at a time so the computer loan gets me up and running quickly. Already been a week without a computer and DCS. I'm having withdrawals...:joystick: I'll post my latest list soon for a "Medium" (z97 i7-4790K) rig and a "hi-end" (X99 DDR 4) rig. If were not for the computer loan through work I would be totally hosed:pilotfly: P.S. Thanks for all the input and let me know what you think. Great forum here and I appreciate all the "eyes". Demon_ Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) I had the same kind of program at my last job in 1991. But they paid me by the pay roll. I mean, the money minus the tax. :D Beware of the tax. Edited October 2, 2014 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

PureEvil Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I'm pretty sure it's something on the mobo. if something like this would happen to me, i'd try next: remove all the components from the case, disconnect all cables, everything, vga, ram, uninstall cpu and cooler, take the mobo off the tray and inspect it. if no visible problem found, put everything back together, apply new TIM on cpu. try running the system. i think even some bad connection can cause problems with pc. fastfreddie Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) Check out the SanDisk Extreme PRO series SSD. What I ended up going with because of the 10 yr warranty and it didn't have the degradation of the Samsung. http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/sandisk_extreme_pro_240_480_and_960_gb_ssd_review,9.html I went with the 5930k, MSI x99sli plus, 16 gskillz ram, evga 850wg2 power supply, sandisk extreme pro 480gb, corsair 780t case, h105 cooler, 980 gigabyte gtx. The only reason I went with the 980 was that there were no available 970s and I really didn't want to wait a few weeks for it. Edited October 2, 2014 by fastfreddie
Demon_ Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) Going to do that tonight with a friend so I don't get too aggravated!:P I'm sorry but this is totally useless. You can damage something in the manipulation process. You can damage the CPU socket nails. And you should always wear a static bracelet. Or always keep your hands on the case frame (ground). Don't disconnect the 120v wire. Try to start the pc with one strip of RAM at the time. Samsung use good quality chip: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2319966 But your SSD is ok! I mean, if you can keep the socket 1155... Why not a Gtx970-980 SLI and 3 monitors configuration :D http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html Edited October 3, 2014 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

outlawal2 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 It is never a good idea to work on a machine that is plugged in, but at the same time if you are not plugged into the wall you have no ability to ground yourself and can harm equipment with static electricity.. A trick I learned a long time ago is to take a standard three-prong cord and using pair of pliers REMOVE the two prongs for the electricity leaving the single prong for the GROUND wire.. (US folks only. I am sure other countries will be similar but I have no experience with electrical items outside the US) Now you can still be lugged into the wall (and GROUNDED) but no power to the equipment... :O) "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." Ashstomper Posted October 22, 2014 Author Posted October 22, 2014 Here's an update: So I ordered and received my new kit. After assembly I was just too excited. I hit the power button and the board powered up...but... np post. no beeps, no video, no bios, no nothing. I thought maybe I need a new PSU as I elected to keep my Corsair HX850, because it's still got 3.5 years of warranty left. So I bought a new PSU and waited about a week because the order got duffed somewhere on the vendor side. Got the new PSU, installed cleanly (cable management) hit the power button... and... NOTHING again. The board lights up but no post, no video, no beeps, no nothing. I submitted an RMA for the MB and Processor which has been a week today. I received email confirmation that my RMA has been approved for replacement and no I wait some more until the new pieces arrive. So going on a month now with no computer. Just wanted to give an update because I've been too frustrated to post anything until now. If all goes well and I get a running computer I'll post some pics because I also went with a Corsair watercooler and it looks neat and clean when all is installed.
