If I copy the Windows 7 DCS installation to some other drive, and copy them back when I am done installing Windows 8, will it work?

It sounds silly even to my own ears. But if it does, it saves me quite some trouble downloading everything again. Thanks for answering in advance.:)

only one way to find out... do it and you'll see if it works (I wouldn't know, probbaly not as there need to be registries in your PC during installation... but you never know) :)

I didn't upgrade from 7 to 8, but I recently reformatted and did a new install of Windows 8.1. My previous OS was also 8.1, but with the upgrade path from 8.

I saved my DCS folders, and also exported the registry key for licenses, re-installed the OS and copied everything back, updated registry and everything works just like before.

Did have to set up controls again as the ID for the controllers changed of course.

Win 10 64 Pro, MSI Z390 I7-9700K @5ghz Kraken Z63, 32Gb Corsair Dominator, MSI RTX-2070, 1TB NVME 2TB SSD's, TM Warthog, Pro Rudders, OpenTrack w/ IR Clip

Windows easy file transfer might help.

you can choose which folders to save, and it will save the settings associated with them into a file.

I'm sure I did this a couple of years ago when upgrading a drive.

Thanks guys for the information. In the end I forgot to copy the files before upgrading, so now I have to download everything again...

A staggering 15G download for DCS open beta... It's gonna take a while.

The Open Beta install will pull files from your non-Beta install first, so you should only need to download a very tiny amount of data.

ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! Extreme 8GB, Corsair HX1000i, Phillips BDM4065UC 40" 4k monitor, VX2258 TouchScreen, TIR 5 w/ProClip, TM Warthog, VKB Gladiator Pro, Saitek X56, et. al., MFG Crosswind Pedals #1199, VolairSim Pit, Rift CV1

Both beta and nonbeta installs are gone with Windows 7... And now I plan to keep the open beta as the only install.

If you are one of those people that deletes the download after you install then yes you will have to download all of it. Otherwise, installing the most recent version you have (the more recent the better, of course), before installing the beta, will still save you lots of download time.

This is why I keep at least one set of install files for every major version release.
