D-Scythe Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 wow....now thats what I call IMMERSION in a battlefeild....ground detail....wow....thats amazing.....:) What's so immersive about it? From those screens, all I see is nice (ground) eye-candy. And in terms of pure looks, LOMAC's new ground vehicles are comparable to SB Pro PE's.
Sleek Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 lookin good to me..expensive to buy tho. Be Good..Be Strong..:drink: ;)
SwingKid Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 What's so immersive about it? Oh D-Scythe.. Do you not know about Steel Beasts? Start with the sound. It's perfect. You can almost smell the tank around you. Crewmates shouting, turret hatch slamming, lead-computing sights clanking, diesels running... The whole sim is just, perfect. It represents all that is good and bright, hoped-for and fun in simming, against the forces of darkness, boredom, begging, waiting, dropped features and time & budget constraints. Look at the tank wheels in the FLIR scope. Perfect. -SK
BBushe Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 steel beasts pro as a tanks sim is analogous to LOMAC as a flight sim, in that it's graphics, while excellent, are designed for function not form (as opposed to games like BF2 where the graphics are designed to be pretty as possible). However comparing the models from LOMAC ground units to SBP models is a bit bizarre. SBP is designed for specific miltary customers, so they dictate what is actually in it, and to some extent how things work. It's easy to get in , move the tank and fire the gun, but once youget into commanding the tank, a platoon maybe, then the game really starts to shine, with the AI doing using proper tactics in response to my, umm, unothodox ones. Also the mod community is starting to kick in and is very tight with the devs. As for the price, I don't think LOMAC+FC+BS will have cost me much less. And I'm ready to pay for LOMAC 2, or perhaps another add-on. speaking of BF2, if you buy BF2, spec forces, euro download, armour download, the next add-on ( I think there is another planned) you'll have wasted in the region of 70 quid. If you really want to save money go for a bargin bin Operation Flashpoint and download FFUR for free. That gives a much more interesting half sim- half game (I say that as while it feels like a great infantry sim, I think the fly/tank parts of it are too arcade still)
Shaman Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Thanks for the screenies! Long long time ago I used to play M1A1 Tank Platoon II, and that was my last tank sim. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
SwingKid Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 steel beasts pro as a tanks sim is analogous to LOMAC as a flight sim, in that it's graphics, while excellent, are designed for function not form I wish that Lock On will one day be like that. Imagine enemy aircraft not being able to see through clouds, or being able to lock Maverick targets at different ranges depending on the wether, time of day, and their size. Then the Lock On graphics would be functional, instead of cosmetic. That's Steel Beasts. The tactics you use in Steel Beasts are designed to reproduce the tactics of real tankers. The weapon and system capabilities are designed to support those tactics, and end up being more realistic as a result. In Lock On, it's more about getting the performance numbers as close as possible, and letting the sim's own tactics evolve from what the planes and weapons are capable of in the sim - i.e. function follows form. Not bad, but a slightly less reliable way to achieve tactical accuracy, IMHO, since tactical accuracy is then somewhat expected to appear naturally instead of by design. Did I mention that Steel Beasts is PERFECT?! :) -SK
Kula66 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 After seeing some SB Pro screenies I dug out my copy of SB Gold ... it is very good - except the sound. My Mrs refuses to sit in the same room with all the clanking of shell cases and grinding of tracks! I'll certainly be buying SB2!
Raploc Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Well it does have some bugs. I've been killed by the "magic" mg bullit more then once. The AI gunners still try to aim at the center of mass even if only the turret is visible. And is it perfect? Nope it's GODLIKE!! I still remember the first time I played SB1, at that time I played Microprose Tank Platoon II a lot. So thinking nothing could touch me except the latest USSR Ultrasnort triplewarheaded AT missile I started the SB1 demo and........got my behind handed to me very very fast. My jaw hit the floor with the speed of sound. Excuse me!! I'm sitting here in the best friggin tank in the world and some smartass BMP just blew me away with it's stupid little missile. So I tried again and again until it hit me, use tactics you git! Don't go Rambo on those T-72's and BMP's like in MTPII in you ubertank. Well the rest is as they say history, I bought SB Gold and a few weeks ago SBProPe. If you like tank sims be sure to get this one.
SwingKid Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I'm sitting here in the best friggin tank in the world and some smartass BMP just blew me away with it's stupid little missile. IIRC, Steel Beasts Pro PE has a post-battle analysis feature that lets you see what hit you, exactly where on your tank, at what angle, speed and with how much penetration, how much armor you had in that spot, and what part of your vehicle was behind that penetration spot, that is now damaged or destroyed. All the armor and warhead values are researched and debated in depth by the community at http://www.tank-net.org , if you think something shouldn't have been able to hit you, that's where to go to complain. ;) -SK
Raploc Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Swingkid this happend to me in the original SB demo 7 years ago. At that time I thought the M1 Abraham was THE tank in the world (thanks to Desert Storm and the tank games from Microprose). Now I know better :D . The tank in M1 tank platoon II was way to uber. I would not dare to question the armor values in SB Pro Pe. People with far more knowledge about armor and tanks then I will ever have came up with these numbers. The only minor "problems" I have with the sim are already identified by Esim and other users. I think the $125 are a bargain if you look at the content you are getting from this sim.:icon_supe
