SnowTiger Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 First of all, does anyone know if ED is planning to have a Forum Category for the Huey and ultimately Each Other Mod that DCS (and others) produce ? It would be handy for posting Huey specific questions (as I'm sure a category for each of the aircraft would be ... like there are already for Black Shark, Mustang and Wart Hog etc). With regards to the Huey, I cannot find anything in the manual or forum that Specifically tells me how to get the Sling Loads. That is, I don't know if it is Missions or what ? I read in one thread where a couple people who posted mentioned F6 !! I have pressed F6 every way I can think of and I have tried pulling up the Communications and pressing F6 then (of course there is No F6 function). I would really love to further my Hovering Practice and refine it while picking up and carrying Sling Loads. Finally and again with regards to the Huey .. I have flown With and Without the Rudder Trim Option. While I can definitely see and feel the advantage of using Rudder Trim, I can also see advantages of not having that Option Checked. I'm curious if the Experienced Huey Pilots tend to use Rudder Trim or not ? Furthermore, I have also been experimenting with the Auto-Pilot Features. They seem to make Trimming somewhat obsolete since you can Set (basically trim) for practically any Attitude including climbing, turning, side-slipping etc. The same is true for the Level Flight and Orbit settings. Do the Experience Pilots tend to use the Auto-Pilot more or less than the Trim ? Or maybe BOTH ... depending on the situation ?!!! Answers to these questions will help me practice for the best outcome. I do prefer Full Sim Mode and wish to become as proficient as possible ... as well as having lots of fun. cichlidfan Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 First of all, does anyone know if ED is planning to have a Forum Category for the Huey and ultimately Each Other Mod that DCS (and others) produce ? You mean like this one. http://forums.eagle.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=263 It's been there for a year and a half. Flagrum Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Regarding Rudder Trim: I fly with rudder trim disabled. I am just used to it since I do it the same way in the Ka-50. I find it too confusing, especially in hectic situations, to re-center the pedals and that usually leads to weired trimming that only gets worse over time - until I crash. :o) I rather keep my feet on the pedals and focus my attention on my eyes and hands. (you know how difficult it is to coordinate movements of you extremities if you want them do different kind of movements, right? Like make circles with your hand over your head and move back and forth your foot vertically. How long can you do this until either both, foot and hand make circles or both move back and forth? And now repeat the exercise - but solve some small math problems in your head as well! ;o) Regarding the auto pilot: don't use it. Or at least, don't use it unless you have a GOOD reason to enable it. It is not a function of the helo, it is a cheat in DCS to allow you to get to the other crew positions (i.e. CPG or door gunners). If you want to shoot stuff as CPG or door gunner, establish the desired attitude, then enable the AP before you switch seats. This makes sure the AP won't perform weired violent maneuvers to get into a stable attitude.
SnowTiger Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 Wow .. I am such an idiot. I never even considered looking in the Belsimtek folder (in fact I never even noticed it. ...thought it was all Other Language folders down there>>>). So cichlidfan >> Thanks for that information. Obviously, I will have to pay more attention to this area of the Forum for several Future Mods etc. Flagrum - I appreciate your information. I didn't think there was an AP in the Huey. I agree it will be handy for switching to the Co-Pilot and Door Gunner Positions etc but otherwise I will not use the AP features. It was just confusing me with regards to using the Trim. I think I will have to Tune my Rudder Pedals with a better Curve than I currently have in order to get more out of them without having to push foot through the floor. Worse yet, my rudders are always being pushed out of reach (haven't nailed them down yet !!). But I think I will continue as you have mentioned (as I have done for my last couple of flights). That is, I will Un-Check the Rudder Trim Option and learn how to fly without that. I know the Huey will be far more maneuverable this way when I want it to be, even if I do have to fight it a bit more when Hovering etc. I'm sure it will become more natural with practice. Thanks again to both of you. This will save me having to pull any more hair out !! At least for now. Plus ... knowing there IS a Huey-Specific Forum will certainly be very helpful. I still can't believe I never thought of checking there. Have a good one fellers. Maybe I'll see you in the Air someday soon !! QuiGon Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) About AP: I can only repeat what Flagrum said: It's a cheat, so only use it if you want to play as a gunner. About rudder trim: I didn't even know you could enable it for the Huey as well. I fly the Huey without rudder trim, but I use it in the KA-50. I thought that's how it is in RL, but is that really so? If not I would like to change it even if I hope there is no rudder trim in the Huey, because like Flagrum I also think rudder trim is pretty weird and mostly I try to keep my feet away from the pedals when I hit the trimmer in the KA-50. SnowTiger Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 I hear that QuiGon. Especially about keeping your feet away from the pedals when trimming. I have crashed MANY times due to Trim and not realizing I had a foot on the pedals. But then my Hotas was pretty much worn out and didn't like to cooperate anyways. I have been practicing in the Huey (for less than 2 days) with both settings i.e. Rudder Trim On and Off. While flying around at cruising speeds it doesn't seem to make much difference, but in slower speeds and hovering it does make a big difference. That said, when trying to hover to pick up cargo ... I am USELESS regardless which setting but then I have only been practicing that for the last 3 hours (only figured out how to get Cargo today). I'm like a Bag of Snakes ... all over the road !! I use the Auto-Pilot in Ka-50 but recently have often turned off the Directional assistance (ie. no Rudder Trim) and fly that way with or without the Flight Director. One thing is sure, you can maneuver way more without Rudder Trim in either Choppers. So it makes for good practice. But I can say that it is MUCH easier for me to hover the Black Shark than it has been (so far) with the Huey. I am all over the place in that thing. But I'll keep at it. Thanks again for the replies. SnowTiger Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 I took the centering spring out of my pedals, that's my rudder trim. I used auto-pilot when I wanted to do aerial-gunnery, before I found out that my stick still works from the door gunner seat.:joystick: Both those comments are interesting to me. The fact is, I was just wondering about my Rudder Pedals the other day. I have the Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals which I have enjoyed using for years ... but then they sat unused for years too. I don't like the spring setting in mine. While I think it's important to have the ability to return to neutral on their own, I wish the spring had much less tension. So I was considering cracking the case open to see what makes them tick and to see if I can make even more "slack" in my return spring(s) ? However, I'm afraid I'll end up making them useless (i.e. breaking them). Currently, I have the spring tension turned to it's lowest ... which isn't nearly low enough, but they are sloppy and "clacky" ... they make allot of slapping noises when I'm really cranking on them. I have tried to eliminate the Travel Distance needed to get full rudder by creating and experimenting with a Curve but I still want fine control at the beginning of the stroke and full rudder long before the end of the stroke (for lack of a better description on my part). I am also curious about your last statement regarding the "stick working in the door gunner's seat". I am not quite ready to jump out of the pilot's seat yet ... too much to learn yet. But do I understand you correctly that you can still be in control .. i.e. still fly the chopper from the door gunner's position ? How difficult is it to do that ? Is it as difficult as trying to hover in one spot for more than .68 milliseconds ? ... which is my current record for hovering in the Huey LOL ! Flagrum Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 (edited) He means the copilot position, I think. The copilot has a cyclic and collective as well, so he is supposed to be able to fly the helo as well, ofc. And in DCS it is possible that you control the flex sight with your TrackIR (i.e. head movement) while you still steer with your joystick. Tbh, I never tried that. I rather like to control the flex sight with my hands, i.e. I pause TrackIR and enable mouse look so that I can pan the flex sight with the mouse. That makes it naturally a bit difficult to use the joystick at the same time ... BUT that is not really different from the real thing: the flex sight has a pistol grip like handle - so in reality you would not be able to use the flex sight and the cyclic at the same time either. (and I am not even talking about the difficulties to do three things at once with your extremities ... or rather four ... flying the helo with both hands and your feet and then additionally shooting with your head ... ;o) Edited November 6, 2014 by Flagrum

I set the collective and work the cyclic with my left hand while I aim with my mouse in my right hand. :joystick: LG 34UC97 34" 3440x1440 monitor | 2x GTX-980 G1 Gaming I7-5820k @ 3.3GHz | 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 2133Mhz Samsung 840 EVO 120GB & 1TB SSDs | Seagate 3TB HDD TM Warthog | Saitek Pro Flight Combat Pedals
Flagrum Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 No, I mean the crewchief/doorgunner position. I set the collective and work the cyclic with my left hand while I aim with my mouse in my right hand. :joystick: Heh, allright. But that sounds even more complicated than what I wrote - as now even your visual perspective is completely different.
