skinkhink Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 The question of airpower and its limits are widely discussed wherever and when ever it is used and the consequences are sometimes huge for civilians on the ground and in the case of Malaysian Airlines MH17, in the air. These consequences sometimes also affect the warring parties in regards to changes in ROE, deployment of forces and the like. Would this be something mission designers could be taking into account when designing missions and campaigns? Would it create an interesting experience for the player? IMO I would enjoy the extra challenge a more restrictive weapons employment would bring to a mission. What do you think?
sgtmike74 Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I think anything that adds to realism would be a plus. I do think it becomes more difficult if designing multiplayer missions though. There is a definite correlation between the level of mission detail and the level of something breaking in a public multiplayer environment.

I have made a mission coincidentally called Collateral Damage on the VSAAF server, believe me that the mission had about a 80 percent failure rate because players damaged or injured civilians due to incorrect weapon choice or just poor weapon delivery. It is more of a challenge on a open multilayer server because of the age old problem of pilots not reading the briefing :) I would suggest such a mission only for a virtual squad.
Slazi Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Definitely interesting. Would be nice to have some UN Mi-8s and ground vehicles doing aid work or evacuation.
PLP Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Yeah I did for myself a long time ago where the role of the player was to intercept targets, and Identify friendly/foe (you could then shoot the target down, or clear it for a s-300). Was good fun, and pretty easy to make using triggers. Edit: I meant civilian/military not friendly/foe. Basically mixing bombers and airliners [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Belgeode Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I actually like the idea of being careful where you shoot. It definitely makes you grow as a virtual combat pilot, if you have to be concerned with minimizing collateral damage. Midnight, is this mission of yours only online, or is it available for download? I'd love to try my hand at that... Of course now I am also keen on coming up with missions like that myself where the objective isn't necessarily to blow everything up but try NOT to blow anything up. Belgeode Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 For now it is a server mission only...I will however release it soon. Cool beans. Well let us know when that is, or I will try to catch it online if the server is open. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] YouTube ~ Twitch
Wrecking Crew Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 If you want grumbling masses, make an A-10C mission w/o TGPs! --- It is more of a challenge on a open multilayer server because of the age old problem of pilots not reading the briefing :) ^^^ Oh so true! WC Visit the Hollo Pointe DCS World server -- an open server with a variety of COOP & H2H missions including Combined Arms. All released missions are available for free download, modification and public hosting, from my Wrecking Crew Projects site.
