Justin Case Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Hi guys! Could anyone with experience from it tell me their opinions on flying DCS on a 34 inch monitor? It's time for me to swap my old 22 inch monitor for something bigger, since I have limited desk space I'm not really considering a 3 display setup but an ultra wide 34 inch could be a nice option. From what I've read my GTX980 seems to be up to drive the 3440 by 1440 pixels seen on the LG UM95. http://www.masterarms.se A Swedish Combat Flight Simulator Community.
outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I have that exact monitor and I love it. (and I am using a GTX770TI) Do NOT try to use this monitor with anything less than 770 though. IMHO that is the lowest graphic card I would recommend.. Your 980 ought to be excellent. A few things to consider with this monitor is that it has all kinds of inputs, but the only inputs you should use for DCS are the DISPLAYPORT or the Thunderbolt inputs... The reason why is that the HDMI standard only provides 33mhz when running at 3440x1440 and that is the point of buying the monitor isn't it? Displayport and Thunderbolt support 55mhz at full resolution. (And YES that is high enough refresh rate.. Not sure why that end up being acceptable, but I have VERY sensitive eyes and this monitor works great and presented no issues at 55mhz where many others suck at much higher resolutions) Go figure.. Verify that you have a Displayport output on your card and if not, steer away from this monitor as you will not be happy running it at 33mhz.. (33Mhz is NOT acceptable to my eyes) And that isn't a problem with the monitor, it is a problem with the HDMI standard as written... HDMI was designed for HD TVs not computer gaming / simulation so HDMI is great for TV use at 1080p... Just not for 3440x1440... "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
cichlidfan Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 HDMI 2.0, which every 980 I have seen has, supports 60Hz @ greater than 1080p. outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) HDMI 2.0, which every 980 I have seen has, supports 60Hz @ greater than 1080p. That may be true for thew card, but the monitor does not support that. Further digging shows that the monitor supports 50MHZ using HDMI at full resolution so I apologize for the mistake and stating 33.. This montior does not support HDMI 2.0 so I still recommend only using Displayport or Thunderbird as I was not happy with HDMI at 50... cichlidfan Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 That may be true but the monitor doesn't support HDMI 2.0 so if you connect that card to that monitor you get 33 mhz because you are limited by the HDMI ports on it... I didn't see a particular monitor specified. outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 OP stated LG UM95 in original post, but thanks for the info on HDMI 2.0 as I was not aware of that info.. "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
cichlidfan Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 OP stated LG UM95 in original post, but thanks for the info on HDMI 2.0 as I was not aware of that info.. I should learn to read better. Personally, I find those monitors to be not tall enough for my taste. I feel like I am looking through a slit. outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Actually you might want to look again as they are actually taller than a standard 27" monitor and have higher vertical resolution. They LOOK like slits for sure, but it took me about an hour to get used to it and I am not going back! "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
cichlidfan Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I do keep looking. I want one for my office use machine which has a 27" @ 2560x1440 now. SharpeXB Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I assume you need to adjust the FOV to account for the wide screen? Do other games without this adjustment have problems? Agree from what I've read displayport is the way to go for higher resolution like 4K Only HDMI 2.0 will handle that at 60hz and some 4K monitors actually don't have that input. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I did not have to adjust anything other than the resolution in the options screen... Works great "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Justin Case Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Thanks for the reply outlawal, I'll report back here if I decide to get an ultra wide screen. At the moment I'm leaning towards that type of monitor. http://www.masterarms.se A Swedish Combat Flight Simulator Community.
agrasyuk Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I'm very tempted to get that monitor as my main desktop (productivity, non-pro photo, and the little gaming I do these days). While i can get better card I'm really worried about reports of hotspots that LG u95 displays in corners. Anton. My pit build thread . Simple and cheap UFC project

agrasyuk Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I mean backlight bleeding through parts of display surface. Like pictured here:http://i.imgur.com/KHbfeLJ.jpg Anton. My pit build thread . Simple and cheap UFC project
outlawal2 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Hmm guess I never really looked / noticed.. I will check mine when I get home, but I don't believe it has that issue.. (Of course my not having the issue says little to nothing regarding overall reliability of the model..) Just sayin'.. "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Justin Case Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 I picked up a LG UM95 yesterday and I think I love it! I've only used it one evening so far so I'm holding on to any recommendations as for now. I'll write more here in a few weeks. http://www.masterarms.se A Swedish Combat Flight Simulator Community.
