Severodinsk is also covered now! :)

Check this...

Gorshkov.jpg

Admiral Gorshkov being worked on for India(haven't come all that far).

Nakhimov.jpg

"Admiral Nakhimov"(third Kirov class).....I think. It could also be Admiral Lazarev as it is a little difficult to make out from the image.

...and at the opposing pier:

Ushakov.jpg

"Admiral Ushakov"(ex. "Kirov") - this one I am certain about because it is the only Kirov class vessel with two AK-100 gun mounts(clearly visible in the image) instead of a single AK-130.

Was crawling around the hind at weston yesterday....Anyone know what these two green hollow sounding things are?

Ka-50 has them too. Some kind of Doppler antenna radomes for measuring altitude and ground speed, IIRC. Presumably because the pitot tube sensors aren't precise enough at low airspeeds, esp. to help the plot maintain an accurate hover, or because of wind.

Why do we care? Because this particular Admiral is part of the Lockon world, one of the Crimean War defenders of Sevastopol.

Hehe yeah so I see - what I don't see are the bins for the retractable Zif-122 launchers for OSA(SA-N-4) or even the Kashtan combat modules for that matter ;) .

Maybe I need glasses, but the only clearly visible objects I can see which could identify the vessel as the "Admiral Nakhimov" are the stern AK-130(but Admiral Lazarev has this too) and what I see as the two Kashtan command modules(in the pink circle)......only Nakhimov and Pyotr Velikiy have Kashtan AD systems. The object in the green circle appears to be the front tracking radar for the Rif system....if this is the case the vessel can only be the Admiral Nakhimov since the Pyotr Velikiy has the Rif-M system for which the front tracking radar has a narrow "collapsable" antenna plate(called "Tomb stone" by NATO) which wouldn't appear with the circular shape as on the shot below.

Nakhimov_1.jpg

He is right about the armament though and I also think the vessel is the Admiral Nakhimov awaiting its overhaul.

Now for a real challenge, where's that Russian berth in Tartus?

-SK

Eh......"berth"?

Anyway, there is a square around Tartus with high resolution imagery as well(wasn't there the last time I checked the area) :) .

I have attached a screenshot of the port facilities at Tartus, but I cannot identify anything particular Russian there though :)

A well-informed Russian tells me:

'Now Russia has a PMTO (“point of material-technical supply”) in the Syrian port of Tartus inherited from the USSR times, and nothing more is planned for the near future. This PMTO includes one berth (the second has decayed by the present), two depots and one residential building (built in 1988 ) with parking. As they were in bad state, the repair has begun in 2005 and also dredging was ordered, because now the depth near the berth is too shallow for cruiser-like ships.

Thus, the Tartus “base” can be used only for short rest and minimum resupply of little navy squadrons cruising in the Mediterranean or sailing towards the Indian Ocean in order to avoid constraining diplomatic formalities and excessive expenses. The facility is useful and suitable, but it should not be exaggerated.

The main Syrian port of Latakia is actually modernized by the Russian firm now, but these arrangements (mostly dredging) are quite civil and bear no relation to the Russian Navy.'

Judging from the description (i.e. one "berth," with a second one decayed), it sounds like he's most likely describing the two little piers attached to the breakwater at the extreme left of your screenshot. They do seem to lead to some kind of parking lot, but the only buildings around seem to be the ones near that Osa missile boat hauled up on dry land. Maybe that one's Russian too? There seem to be a lot of other patrol boats nearby that are obviously Syrian Navy though, and a sort of half-wall separating the buildings from the piers/parking.

There does seem to be one floating vessel parked at the "berth" though. I don't suppose you can ID it? Maybe the Russians were paying a visit, the day this photo was taken.

Ok check the attached images Andrew - is this the area you were refering to?

The first image shows an overview of the area to the left in my previous screenshot - the second image is a zoom-in on what could be the two berths mentioned.....one operational and the other under water(i.e. in decay).

Third image shows the area to the extreme left of the first image - with the missile boat on land and surrounding buildings.

I cannot identify the vessel in the second image - it is some sort of cargo vessel.

LOL!

I like the question mark next to the words "in decay" :)

Like, maybe it's a berth for Oscar-class submarines? ;)

Ah, Russia...

Eh....no :) .

Question mark as in whether it could be the one that the guy refered to as being "in decay".

And I think you will find that "berths" for Oscar class submarines are above water too ;) :D .

Am I the only one who thinks the Varyag pier looks nicer than the Kuznetsov pier?

Well the Varyag is at a major yard facility in Dalian, while the Kuznetsov in the image I posted, is just moored at pier in Murmansk which may explain why it doesn't look as fancy......but at least it is above water :D

Yeah, let's look on the bright side.. At least it isn't covered with rainbow-coloured Floggers! :balloon:

The Cubans aren't that far from painting rainbow floggers....

these seem to be the remains of the Cuban AF. Ok, they have a lot of shelters to hide aircraft into, but AFAIK many units have been disbanded due to lack of funds and maintenace

Why on Earth do they park their aircraft this way?

it seems very common in former Soviet bloc countries (Russia and WP allies).... but WHY? I wonder what could happen if someone issues a "scramble" order!

Cause nobody is going to invade them, it's not the US, where paranoia rules supreme. There won't be any terrorists flying in fighter jets coming towards Russia, so they also don't need stealth flanes that can only shoot down other planes and cost over 250 million each ;)
