leafer Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Does google earth show these images in real time or are they pre drawn or something? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Trident Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Most of the aircraft parked in weird patterns are older types awaiting disposal (MiG-21/23/25). That Russian airfields site is a nice find Starlight, probably the best English-language resource on the net for this topic. Puts FAS and globalsecurity to shame for sure, although that isn't hard, admittedly (Nikolayevsk-na-Amure is not in the NIMA database of placenames, so that must mean it doesn't exist? Very thorough analysis indeed ;) )
Shaman Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Take a note these photos are made after the cold-war. Most of these planes are no longer in operation.. just rotting there or are used for spare-parts. About scrambling all these numbers. When you want to and are forced to, you're able to :) My father (used to work as ATC there ->EPKS) told me about drills in the '70s and '80s when they had to scramble almost 100 jets in less then 5 minutes. Planes were taking off from opposite directions from runway and taxiways at the same time. They passed each other like on some hardcore airshow. On the runway alone formation takeoffs were at least 4 planes minimum. The entire group/regiment had to leave the base from under incomming nuclear blow. I repeat - everything had to be done under 5min, otherwise personel was in real trouble from their supervisors. To make fun of it. I always asked my father: after 5min, when your job was done, what about you and other guys on the tower and the entire airbase personel? They just had simple bunkers in the basements and that was it. It was all about saving the planes. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer

Pilotasso Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Thats an impressive linup of aircraft, and yest they seem to be old planes from the USSR era just dying out slowly in the open. I wonder how much money would require to put them all airborne in a major battle at once. Its mind boggling. .

WhiskeyRomeo Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 Google Earth ver 4.0 beta is out now. New user interface along with upgraded high resolution coverage. Definately one of my favorite programs. It's a good thing this isn't real time imagery - a lot of us would never get any work done! :smilewink:
