Yes, it would have been nice.

Tell the missile manufacturer for not making it happen, then complain to the world of physics for not allowing it to be practical. ;)

I did find this though. It is able to fire without an ir lock.

In cases of maximum head-on range launches where lock-command cannot be utilised, missile can be fired in PPS: In this mode, missile will fly straight until achieves target lock. As missile lacks capability of maneuvering before lock, aircraft itself must maneuver so that missile will be pointed to no more than 15 degrees bearing of the target for confident capture by the IR seeker after launch. Equalising altitude is recommended but not required.[4] On combat operations section of the Su-27 manual, this mode of usage is especially recommended for head-on usage for passive attacks at targets with 0 degrees approach angle (i.e. another fighter moving to intercept), leaving target unalerted to incoming missile.

Yep, it'll lock onto the first thing it finds. Like a cloud, reflection of the sun from a lake or someone's solar-powered water boiler unit.

It's really not a 'recommended' mode of use at all since you can't even guarantee that the missile will fly straight where you want it to.

In-game there are no other IR sources except for the sun or aircraft.

All that amounts to is abuse of simulation limitations.

Perhaps. Amongst many, many, other abuses. No need to derail the thread though.

Still its an acceptable real life tactic.

I demand the ET seeker nerfed to compensate for the lack of roof mounted water boiling units in this game.

Hey guys, talking about sound tones and similar stuff, I've seen videos on youtube where the computer female voice (Betty or whatever she is called) says "Launch Authorized" in Russian when the LA or ПР appear on the screen but I don't get such a sound notification when I have ПР on my HUD. How do I fix this?

I have been trying to use r73 to destroy ground targets. I have come to the conclusion that they are not attracted to vehicles (burning or intact). Using them as unguided rockets is possible but hard to master.

Does anyone know if heatseekers would be attracted to vehicles since your all saying the sun and a boiler will cause it to aquire new targets?

The fuze would probably detonate the missile before it got a chance to hit the target. Heat-seekers vs ground targets is not a new thing (in RL), but it is most certainly not used operationally, and you won't be getting that capability in-game.

Really? I'm sure a recall a time where Aim9s would lock on to ground targets. Perhaps its been changed.

I've tried to lock both ground targets and the sun with AIM-9Ms on multiple occasions in DCS and it has not worked for me before. Even slaving the AIM-9 to a targeting pod and locking the pod on the ground target doesn't work. However, I have managed to lock and shoot down missiles with the AIM-9. That was pretty cool.

If we ever get the AIM-9X I would expect it to come with air to ground capability.
