F-20 was pretty cool for it's day but it also was almost the apex that could be expected from F-5 platform. F-16 had much more future upgrade potential.

It is very seldom a jet which isn't bought into manufacturing country's armed forces to get other customers. Not unseen but very rare anyway.

It still had tiny wings, tiny fuel tanks, a tiny nose to house a relatively little radar (even more so than F-16).

I'll go out on a limb and say I expect MiG-35 to have a parallel fate with F-20. Russian military continously postponing it's (not numerous) orders for it, and the type has failed to attact any sales in multiple opportunities in which it was a contender. Similar condition, a substantial upgrade that brings the jet a to a pretty good stand among what is contemporary, but already is at the edge of what can be expected of the platform especially in face of what will come in future.

So, I don't think Tigershark's cancellation was necessarily political. If you look from perspective of USAF, F-16 was offering more possibilities, for not much more cost. From perspective of potential foreign customers, only advantage it may have had over rivals would be it's price.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

If you liked the F-20, you might enjoy a fictional warfare book called "Warriors". Describes a Saudi Air Force squadron of F-20s led and trained by US Airmen. Pretty well written.
