jcbak Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I have viewed videos where AH-64 pilots are firing Hellfires (who hasn't?). I noticed that there are situations where no radio transmission was made before firing and then I've heard where the phrase, "Weapon away, " was used before firing a missile. During MP I have heard some guys use the term, "Rifle." What is the proper terminology that is used by American helo pilots when firing missiles? Reaper6 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 It's been a couple years since I retired from the military. But, IIRC Army uses "On the way" or "weapon away" because CAS flights are mainly Rotary. Air force I believe uses "Rifle". I have never heard any Army rotary aircraft use the term "rifle". BaD CrC Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Interresting. Thanks. It seems like we have the wrong terminology in my squad for a long time now. https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden
Reaper6 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 No problem. Proper terms for each weapon system would be; chain gun - "30mm on the way" unguided rockets - "(HE, Illum, smoke, MPSM, Flechette)Rockets, on the way" Guided Missile - "Missile away" Reaper6 "De oppresso liber" NZXT Phantom Full Tower, Intel Core i7 4960X Processor(6x 3.60GHz/15MB L3Cache) 20% Overclocking, 64GB DDR3-2133 Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan Black-6GB SLI Mode(Dual Cards), Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 Motherboard, ViewSonic PJD5132 SVGA Multi-Region 3D Ready Portable DLP Projector, Track IR 5, Thrustmaster Warthog, Cougar MFDs.

AlphaOneSix Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Proper terms in the U.S. Army are "Shot" for missile or rocket engagements and "Firing" for gun engagements. But that's the "official" line and individual units and crews will usually just come up with their own terminology. Basically, as far as the U.S. Army is concerned, as long as the communication is concise and effective, it's good enough.
ED Team Raptor9 Posted March 23, 2015 ED Team Posted March 23, 2015 ...as long as the communication is concise and effective, it's good enough. +1...in DCS, whatever works for a virtual squad that wants to standardize their terminology, as long as it does the job. I would post the "Official" Gunnery Manual for Rotary Wing, but not sure Uncle Sam would like that. Ha ha. Yes, please don't... Afterburners are for wussies...hang around the battlefield and dodge tracers like a man. DCS Rotor-Head
Reaper6 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 After a quick email to confirm... I stand corrected, my buddy set me straight. 6-111. The crew member firing will announce “shot” before trigger pull for missiles or rockets or “firing” for cannon.
