Huey - I'm loving it!

Yah, just like the macdees - which, OTOH, I don't love. But never mind.

 

Had this happenstance where I didn't fly the bugger for a couple of months, but concentrated on pseudo-Korea fixed-wing groundpounder stuff instead. Well, all good and fun was had, but then I have this rudder pedal mod where I've substituted the tension spring with a rubber band - and that broke, so I ended up with a "limp" rudder without any centering at all. So enter the Huey again... w00t! I found that this is the PERFECT rudder setup for it! I'm hovering, taking off, landing, whatever like nobody's business now - and after this wee break, am finding again how great a chopper this is to just fly around in and enjoy the ride!

 

All that said, I'm still waiting for the devs to finish this fine whirlybird... so BST, are you listening? ;)

RL helicopter rudder does not autocenter indeed. Remove the spring as soon as you buy any pedals. As far as I know neither do in RL fixed wing neither. It's way too difficult to hover and fly (apart from unrealistic) with the spring

When it first hit my gaming computer, way back when?, the Huey was a bitch to take off and land. But, then, I was warned that that would be the case. So, I fought and fought and eventually flew the silly contraption.

 

I left it for several months with just a bit of skill, enough to approach a windy oil rig platform but hardly anywhere near the ability to land on such a frustrating location.

 

About a month ago, bored with a long weekend, I got into the Huey and, after just a moment or two of flying after lift off, I swore I'd quit my job, divorce my wife, stock up on a year's supply of frozen pizza, and NEVER fly anything other than the Huey.

 

I thought I was hot sh?t because the Huey was such an easy thing to fly and, as I felt, I was good at flying it. Then I met Atorque on the VA server who promptly showed me that I was still an idiot. I watched him, tried to emulate him while he flew. I practiced offline, as well. I'm not sure if I can even come close to comparing myself with his flying skills, but I assure you: I can land and take off on anything except an airborne Mig-29 being chased by a hungry F-15. (Maybe I could land on one given enough practice which I am willing to do, but I don't think I could stay on it for very long.)

 

I second msalama's request to BST and ask that some more fine tuning and bells & whistles be considered. But, by golly, don't touch the flight dynamics!!!!

 

The only thing I can think of to request is that a Hospital building be located in each major city and appropriately painted with a nice red + on top but, that certainly is not a requirement. (Just one of those bells & whistles things, you know.)

 

There is nothing in DCS that comes close to supplying a copious amount of flying joy than the Huey. Well, the F-86 comes in very close.

 

The only problem I have with Russian helo's is that, well, they're Russian and I, unfortunately, speak only Canadian. If Belsimtek would consider creating the Jolly Green Giant or even the the CH-47 Chinook, I'd kiss their collective boots!

 

Anyway, one BIG YEAH! for the Huey.

Exactly. There're still systems modelling stuff missing, and quite important at that, but the FM is just great. Seconded :)

=Mac= there are several English language Cockpit mods for the Russian birds. These are excellent and replace all Russian language with English text. These mods opened up a whole new world of flying for me since I also don't speak Russian. You can find the mods on the website in the user files section.

Yeah, I have to say that the Huey is my favorite ride. Hard to believe that I had it for almost one year before I actually sat down to get into it... real life and all... but god am I hooked now! Wish I could say I am some hot sh!t pilot and all, but alas, I still suck compared to most people but I still have fun with it. I also bought the Mi-8 recently but have yet to dive into it to check it out much as I'm still too infatuated with my first love...

I'll check into that. If the flight fidelity of the Mi-8 is anything like the Huey's, I'll love it. (No, I don't mean the flight dynamics: I know it's heavier and flies a bit different. I know that. That is what is drawing me to it.)

The MI-8 is better than the Huey in my opinion!

 

It's got a lot more power and lifting capacity, and it's entire character changes as it goes from lightly to heavily loaded. It's got the doppler system which is a fantastic navigational aid. It's faster than the huey, and it's stabilization autopilot makes it much less of a handful to keep steady. Systems management is a bit more involved, things like dust protection being left on can make a real difference when heavily loaded or at high altitude.

 

I've recently gone through a USAF checklist for starting up an MI-8, and DCS matches it perfectly.

 

The Huey and the MI-8 are both amazing machines, and you cannot go wrong with either of them.

Take a look in this center detend remove procedure, in your case remove the center spring too (picture 7), is easy (and reversibly).

I think that adjust the center friction knob to maximum will help the pedal hold position in the eventuality you need to take your feet off.

Fixed wing aircraft dont have any centering springs on the rudder but they do recenter by themselves from the airflow around the control surfaces. The springs in our rudder pedals are there to simulate that airflow.
