Nascar Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 I am thinking about upgrading my internet package. What are the minimum speeds you would recommend for multiplayer games and streaming HD videos? I have a Time Warner standard package and get a lot of buffering issues with HD movies. My speeds were about 25-30Mbps download and 1Mbps upload but my speed now is 15Mbps down and 1Mbps up. They offer 20/2Mbps for $10 more, $30/5 $20 and 50/5 $30 more for 12 months. AceRevo Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) You want good up too, as many here would say you can do good with 1 or 2 up I personally would go with 5 up at minimum... I have 75 down and up--- and for 30 bucks a year, thats a very good price... If u cant save up a few bucks each months i feel sorry for u man :) Edited May 10, 2015 by AceRevo X-55 profile for the F-15C
PiedDroit Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) The ping will be more important for online gaming, unfortunately it may be affected by the proximity of your home to the provider's land lines (sorry if I formulate this badly, I don't know the exact terms in english), and the quality of the equipment. If your ping is already good then you should be good to go, but if you have a bad ping right now it's now guaranteed that you'll get better ping with a more expensive connection from the same provider. For the record, I'm using a 30Mbps(down)/10Mbps(up) connection and I'm happy with it, for both gaming and bandwidth. Edited May 10, 2015 by PiedDroit

Demon_ Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 What is the best ping time? ADSL or cable? Sadly, i think speed have no influence on the ping time. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
trooph Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Hello. For twitch streaming i wouldnt recommend anything below 5mbit/s upload. And im talking about pretty stable upload. With 2mb/s u might be able to run ur stream 720p at very low bitrates and sound sampling and that will look crap for viewers. ping depends on the way u are conected to the network (fiberwire or copperwire) and distance to the server ure playing on/stream to.
shagrat Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Ping (more correct "latency") is NOT affected by bandwidth. It depends on the number and performance of the routers and/or switches in the complete path (internet) between two hosts, and sometimes on the quality of the line between your home and the providers concentrator. If you have ADSL and bad ping, a switch to cable might improve the ping, but only if the line is an issue. Also, a stable latemcy of 200ms is better, than a jittery one oscillating between 90ms and 200ms in a few seconds... If your neighbor has cable or another provider, you might ask him if you could measure his line. It is usual to get pretty similar performance on the same street, as the provider hardware/lines are usually the same.
