Detail & Scale released an E-book titled Colors and Markings of U.S. NAVY F-14 TOMCATS, Part 1: Atlantic Coast Squadrons. Boy, does it live up to the hype! The amount of information and photographs presented make this worth more than the $9.99 price listing. Its probably the most comprehensive chronological reference of every single Atlantic Fleet F-14 squadron's insignia and markings. You simply cannot find this kind of information and photography anywhere else.

This would be a perfect reference for anyone who is going to design skins for the Tomcat once it gets released for DCS. We could theoretically simulate every squadron at every point in its Tomcat history!!!

The sequel, which will cover West Coast Squadrons, is coming up. That is going to take my breath away... :pilotfly:

Yeah, there were a lot of subtle, yet significant differences from the Tomcat that was in service during the '70s to that of the '80s, not to mention the F-14B and F-14D.

Thanks for the heads up! Great book! I hope all these modellers books get redone in digital format. The modern hog guide would be a nice digital book as well!

This looks awesome, though I particularly excited about the Pacific Coast fleet addition!

Good references is huge for both reskinners and even LNS. Getting good references can be a challenge, especially since the TPS pattern doesn't stand out well in photos.

Here is a case in point:

The first picture (my avatar) looks like a single color scheme that is all dark ghost grey(?) or heavily worn/dirty gull grey (not likely).

The second photo increased contrast which clearly shows the TPS demarcation lines. It can be hard to see the true scheme in many photos, especially bright sun from the 1980s - not sure why.

Though, the good news is that ~95% of Tomcats from the mid-80s to early 2000s were standard TPS with a few notable exceptions (like gull grey CAG/CO birds or VF-84's unique 80s TPS scheme).

One of the only disappointments of the Aerosoft F-14 was that their late-80s to early-90s schemes did not have accurate TPS schemes, mostly because the photos references can be hard to interpret and can lead someone astray.

These type of references REALLY help to avoid the pitfalls. It's a great thing and I'm looking forward to checking them out.

Thank you for sharing!

The best part is, we get to see some lesser-known designs and insignia used by F-14 squadrons over the years. Its amazing how often each squadron changed their look over the years.

Yes definitely. VF-32 over Lebanon is a great example:

The tail insignia is much different.

A few lesser known schemes would be great, many tend to just think of VF-84/VF-103 (bones) and VF-31. Diversity is good.

Another thing that this photo demonstrates - the F-14 (both A and B) will fit in nicely at NTTR. Can't wait!

It works just fine on my kindle app on the laptop and on my iPhone, it just doesn't work on my old Kindle (keyboard version) wasn't until I went to bed last night that I got a chance to download it to my laptop, which is my preferred version to read on.
