EscCtrl Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 http://www.ogrish.com/archives/cave_complex_destroyed_in_afghanistan_May_24_2006.html (WARNING! the content on this site is not for the feint of heart - the link i provided is perfectly safe for you to view here though as long as you stray no further) How do they keep the plane so still (the one filming) or is it taken in a helicopter? they mention a predator UAV was used but i didnt think they could hover? And by still I dont mean from wobbling about but as in the camera looks like it is a fixed position as opposed to flying.
plug pray Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 They dont hover))). It's just a predator flying around viewing with a big zoom. No magic).
EscCtrl Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 really? but the camera doesnt move an inch it seems? I've always wondered how they did that - wow such an anticlimax too :( thanks anyway
plug pray Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 that's just a trajectory of big radius with a camera of a big zoom pointed at the object. Also, the pradator flyes slowly. So, you have a feeling that the picture is almost still.
Force_Feedback Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Mujahadeen live to fight another day!!! :pirate: Not that shocking, well, at least not as shocking as some movies I've seen from that site about a year ago (haven't looked since). So an A-10 dropped a LGB on the cave entrance, that's sweet, I mean as far as lase-carrier cooperation goes, not that they wounded the freedom fighters, as any loss of life is not nice. 1 Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

dodger42 Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 They can keep those cameras locked and do orbits. I was on an op with the Army with F111s doing PaveTac cover from around 30,000ft. We were on comms with them, and they could describe the bad guys in amazing detail. At one point they said "Theres a fat guy exiting the building". They cruised around up their doing orbits whilst we sneaked in. Makes it pretty easy to stay hidden when you have a guy with a godseye view on the phone. . . . Force_Feedback Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Dude your like...nuts n stuff, you have like a Jack Bauer fetish? :joystick: lol I'm nuts and all, but if you don't, then better watch out, he knows what you think, if you don't check your six more often you might find him standing there with a towel in his hands and a gun pointed at your kneecaps. Your wife may be tortured as well. :P So did the A-10s carry LGBs? Or was that "lase" -something in that video just a rangefinder or something. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Guest IguanaKing Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 That was video taken from the Predator. Its actually quite easy to keep the picture stable and appear almost motionless, its all done through gyro stabilization of the sensors. :D

Its actually quite easy to keep the picture stable and appear almost motionless, its all done through gyro stabilization of the sensors. :D I've seen laser imaging (video where you can see the laser beam) of the Predator lasing a target, from the ground, while the thing itself flew waay up in the sky. I was amazed how steady the laser was illuminating the target, it did jitter a bit, but I guesstimate the radius of error was around 3 meters, doing thet from like 12km away (diagonal distance to target) is pretty impressive IMHO. The laser reminded me of those laser propelled craft made by some engineer, the one that said we will fly in laser propelled flying saucers in 20 years from now :P Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
