whitehot Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 Hey.. I'm in the process of putting up a new rig that, I hope, will be performing much better, especially in flight sims. Since I am kinda versed in overclocking and do that for all the cpu's I got (It's a very nice feeling when you see a good fps improvement in games like DCS, after putting hours in overclocking and related research), I went ahead and decided to base my build around a CPU with a good potential in that area. So I finally bought me a new Skylake i7 6700K CPU and a MSI M5 board. I still have to procure me the RAM but will do that in a couple of weeks (I'm still undecided between Corsair Vengeance and GSkill Ripjaws, but I already know that I 'd want it to be at least 3000 Mhz in speed and CAS-15). Now, I know that when changing the base components in a PC one oughta reinstall the operating system from scratch. Nonetheless, I would like to at least try to keep my OS installation, just reinstalling software that would eventually not work anymore. My question is, will I get problems with DCS world by doing that? I understand that I would need to register the modules again, but that shouldn't present too much trouble. I don't believe that aside from registration issues the sim will not function correctly, yet I was wondering if anybody here has already tried to perform this operation, and what kind of trouble he/she did encounter, if any. Thanks, good simming all! cichlidfan Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 Changing your CPU will invalidate all of your current DCS activations. You will use up an activation for every product. In other words, you will have to reactivate them anyway so there is no advantage in moving the installation (except for the time it takes to reinstall). BitMaster Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Your sig doesnt state what OS you're using. Let's assume you still run 7, then deactivate all DCS before you swop the board/cpu and boot up your Win7 just as normal, it will reboot twice initially but that should be all you have to do other than updating your mobo drivers and maybe deinstall obsolete mobo stuff. From there on, I'd install 10 via upgrade...or...if 10 was on before, just stay on 10. I'd try and keep it but wouldnt hesitate to format it all either... you gotta know in what you invest your time and if it will succeed. Investing time in an already spoiled 7 or 10 or whatever is wasted time and energy, you would rather go from scratch and do it all nice and clean but if your machine is hot rockin' and glowing you can just try to pimp the OS up 1 stage, usually they do it without any hiccups :) Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X

I have a win7 x64 Ultimate, regularly updated, and intend to keep it until dx12 games start coming out regularly, which is something that, I read, will happen near the end of this year. My installation is still clean and "agile", it boots up in no more than 30 secs since I press the power button, yet I have plenty of games installed, both on steam and not, and going through reinstalling them all, recovering savegames and all is something I would really avoid if possible. In the end I will not reinstall windows unless the new CPU/mobo cause some unrecoverable error to the OS (which I tend to exclude). Even if I am forced to reinstall, I 'll go for the same W7 version I have now. I am still kind of uninterested in W10 (As about 8, didn't even consider it), although dx12 seem to give some nice buff to PC gaming in general, which is something that is always welcome. Moreover, as you said, having a working w7 install would allow to install a w10 version later this year as an upgrade, which would import the users settings and installs in the new OS. It's also a little pity that our favorite sim is on the verge of being released with a shiny new dx11 engine when dx12 are about to hit consistently all about.. But I think we'll live with that :).. Anyway, thanks folks for your replies, u helped me to decide myself on how to put up this new install [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel i7 6700K @ 4.2, MSI M5 Z170A Gaming, NZXT X61 Kraken liquid cooler, PNY Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 Mhz C15, samsung 840 evo SSD, CoolerMaster 1000W Gold rated PSU, NZXT Noctis 450 cabinet, Samsung S240SW 24' 1920x1200 LED panel, X-52 Pro Flight stick.
