I was sitting here pondering if I was to install LOMAC again and I remembered last time I played the carrier take-off wasn't functioning as it should.

Now I don't know much about Su-33 and the Russian carrier type but from what I remembered I didn't get a catapult launch when taking off from a carrier, but the AI did. This resulted in that I almost always was near to stall.

Has this been fixed? Or did I miss to press some take-off catapult launch button?

Thank you in advance

No Russian carrier has ever been fitted with a catapult

thats what practice and the Ramp at the end of the carrier is for... none of the AI that take off from the russian carrier have catapults..... here's how it works there are automatic chalks that come out of the deck and keep you from moving then you rev up your engines to afterburners and they release to as you do that to get maximum thrust on take off... so dont pack to many weapons if your not used to taking off like that because it will be heavy.... make sure to pres ctrl-f for maximum flaps for maximum lift :P

Su-33 now only has one flap setting, f will do fine. Real life su-33s take off from the nr.3 ramp when fully fueled and loaded, making it have a 180m run-up distance. With a medium load it's realistic to take-off from the default position. Too bad the "emergency thrust" isn't moddled, it would make the take-offs less "Oh God, Oh God, I'm gonna crash" like.

Thanks for all the great answers mates. Okay, I see, no catapult, eh? But is it just me that thinks that the AI always seems to get a better start?

Because they use emergency power - You don't ;)

Well all their takeoffs and landings are totally scripted. There's no real flying involved there. If there would be our CPUs would get choked to death. Try to take less fuel, and then refuel in mid-air if necessary.

I was always stalling out and ending up in the drink with the Su-33 after take-off when I first started trying to fly the Russian jets. Then I read a post by someone who advised me to clean up the jet by getting the gear up asap and not try to climb, but to fly level until I got the speed well up and only then to start a gentle climb. That advice helped me a lot.......

I've heard 279th KIAP pilots that they don't even need to pull on the stick too hard. Aircraft start from a ramp by itself (almost).

Procedure

This works grewat for me:

.- lower your flaps

.- Push your breaks

.- Engage afterburners (kepp your breaks)

.- When you notice that the thrust has started to move your plane, release your breaks.

.- right after you leave the carrier deck, take up your wheels, and DO NOT try to climb, just keepk a 20º angle. Be carefull with this: after you leave the deck, your angle will be almost exactly 20º, but after 1 or 2 seconds, if you keep pushing your stick the plane will react and give you a grater angle, and putting you in danger if stall, so keep your atention and be smooth with the stick, if you keep a 20º angle, you will see that after 5 seconds or so, you will gaing speed and will begin to gain height.

Hope it helps. At the begining of practice you may loose some height, but after a while, you will take of fully loaded without problems if you need.

I understand that the Russian carrier has no catapult, but what about the American one? It is possible to land on the American carrier, but I haven't figured out how to activate the catapult system. Without it, the Su-33 just kind of saunters on down into the drink. Is there a way to use the catapult with the Su-33?

No.

The AI has a magical ability to accelerate, even in aircraft that should be AFM . . . .

If you take the Su25T and tweak a game file so it can spawn on the Kuznetsov, a short-run take-off will result in a very short flight of about 50 feet straight downwards off the ski jump at a speed of 120km/h.

However . . . . if you take an AI Su25T and do the same thing, it somehow manages to accelerate to 200km/h before reaching the edge of the ramp.

I guess it's easier to program it that way than to simulate post-stall, oh-crap, out-of-control-splashes for the AI.

In any case, it is plenty possible to take off from the American carrier in the Su33 . . . . use the chocks provided, use full afterburner, use flaps, be good at holding your aircraft on the AoA limiter, and just for good measure try not to do it at maximum weight . . .

70-80% fuel load works fine, but remember to hit the gear as soon as it leaves the deck, and you're looking (hopefully) to end up about 10m above the water. I remember before they fixed the takeoffs from the Kuz it was harrowing just doing that. As said, also don't loadout too much, or you'll end up in the drink. Another thing that helps is to set your up trim to max. If you got a light load you shouldn't require much stick movement to stay aloft.

Landing on the CVN-70 is easy, but a good thing to check out at http://www.lockonfiles.com are the Carrier Ops mods (both Su-33 and F/A-18C) that enable you to takeoff and land without manually selecting the CVN-70. I don't know how the takeoff with the F/A-18C mod, but the above is for the Su-33.

Here's a short track I did awhile ago (FC 1.12a) that shows me doing a demo of landings and takeoffs. It may work by itself not too sure, but it uses the Carrier Ops (Su-33) for the Crimean Air Wars mod:
