In the second video of the first post. What is the purpose of the string on the nose of the aircraft?

"For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return."

Leonardo Da Vinci

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came."

It's a slide slip indicator - the Tomcat definitely did many things "the old fashion way".

Tomcats are pretty prone to dutch role and the nose likes to yaw away from the direction of roll at low speeds. That indicator helps with the management of those issues, particularly on approach. Even the F-14D had it, in spite of it's much improved HUD.

Hey Sea Wings - excellent collection of videos, I really enjoyed watching. The airshow demo videos really bring back memories - nothing would shake the ground like those F-14B/D Tomcat demos - rattles your sternum! Of course, even the F-14A was quite a sight in person - I really miss those day.

Great video, shows yet another unique Tomcat feature - the control stick has a separate axis for pitch and roll (almost like a control yoke...). The pitch axis is at the mounting of the stick to the cockpit floor and the roll axis is about halfway between the floor and handgrip. Looks cool in action. I don't think the Aerosoft Tomcat caught this little detail....

I love all of this media, so awesome to see this Tomcat renaissance in progress!

Ah pet peeves! Does it bother anyone else that people sit down in cockpits at airshows and start flipping switches yanking on the controls, and attempt to pull the gear up without having any ideas about the carnage that they could cause? Maybe it's just me but it drives me crazy watching that video lol.

Luckily not an airshow.

That's is a permanent display piece at a museum. Little harm from screwing around in the cockpit ;).

It's great that there are still a few Tomcats around that weren't thoroughly "de-miled". I wonder if this is the one in Napa on permanent open display? I don't think the cockpit is usually open, last I heard that one was pained in classic VF-1 markings.

So I'm not the only one who wanted to beat that guy down with a bat!

The final secound with him grabbing the LGH made me want to reach through my screen and strangle him..

For the WIN

If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.

One of my favorites

To include youtube links, you have to put everything past the watch?v= into the [/YOUTUBE] boxes.

No one ever told me so I had to figure this out too!:book:
