Cowboy10uk Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 Hi guys, up till now I have plugged all my equipment, rudder pedals, stick, throttle, collective, track IR, Oculus Rift & Camera, jetseat etc directly into the PC. However as I've added more and more kit, I've now got to the stage where I have wires absolutly everywhere, and USB connections coming out both the front and back of the PC, over the desk, under the desk, around the chair and I'm starting to get rather blooming annoyed with tripping over them and basically the mess that they are making. Long gone is a nice tidy sim area and well I'm fed up with it. So I'm thinking about going for a single powered hub, that I can attach and hide it underneath the desk and hide all the wiring using one of those plastic tube type things, and plug ALL my Sim equipment into a single hub. Now I'm sure I remember being told that you should use a hub for joysticks etc due to lag, but is this really true? May I ask if anyone here has done something similar, are you plugging direct to your PC or via a hub. Also would this hub be suitable? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CBEVTKI?keywords=USB%20hub&qid=1448888269&ref_=sr_1_92&s=computers&sr=1-92 ORICO 10 Ports Aluminum Portable USB3.0 HUB with 36W 12V/3A Power Adapter and 3.3Ft. dburne Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I have been using a powered USB hub for all my gear for quite some time, works very well for me. Viersbovsky Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I use an USB Hub and I feel no lag - and I am very picky when it comes to such things. Of course, a USB Hub will add lag, but it is probably in the single digit millisecond range at most. whitehot Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I have my joystick connected to a hub, so that I can disconnect it when I'm playing games that are disturbed by the joystick. Anyway, it works flawlessly, and I can't feel or see any difference in lag connecting it to the hub or directly on the mobo usb ports [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel i7 6700K @ 4.2, MSI M5 Z170A Gaming, NZXT X61 Kraken liquid cooler, PNY Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 Mhz C15, samsung 840 evo SSD, CoolerMaster 1000W Gold rated PSU, NZXT Noctis 450 cabinet, Samsung S240SW 24' 1920x1200 LED panel, X-52 Pro Flight stick. mondaysoff Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 Hi cowboy10uk. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009R921SE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 I have been using this powered hub now for nearly three years. I really can't stand cables trailing everywhere. All I can say is I have had all my control devices plugged into this including: Wireless keyboard and mouse Rudder pedals TM Warthog TIR5 And have not experienced any problems or lagging whatsoever. All I have directly plugged into PC is the Hub itself, printer and external sound system, the latter two won't work through a hub. I am soon to upgrade my system from a Mac to a brand new PC with Windows 10, so I am hoping this setup will still work smoothly. I had to get some sort of hub, because the Mac only has 4 ports. Best thing I did for tidiness at the least. Just make sure whatever you purchase is powered.
Viersbovsky Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 (edited) I want to add four factors: 1. USB is tiered anyway. In the end, it is nodes that all lead to a single place. So using a hub should be no problem, it is what usb was made with in mind. 2. You need to make sure that the HUB provides enough current for all devices. That hub you want has 36W. That's a lot, should be enough for your equipment. In the worst case, you may want to plug the heavy power consumers directly to your PC usb port. I don't think it will be neccessarry though. 3. USB 3.0 is in my humble opinion a load of... Half of the USB 3.0 sticks I own do not work with usb3.0 ports. I have to use a USB2.0 cable to get them to work. I cannot use my TrackIR with my USB 3.0 hub either, it needs to be connected directly to the PC. edit: 4. When I disconnect the Hub and then reconnect, WIndows sometimes does not recognize the equipment - or take some minutes until they are ready. I then need to disconnect and reconnect until everything works. If I leave everything as is and don't disconnect, it works without a hitch though, even when restarting the pc. Just don't disconnect until you have to. In the end, the USB hub should do it's job, add no lag and help minimise the mess. You may have some problems like devices not working when plugged into the hub though. Like all things computer, sometimes things that should work simply don't. I'm using it with X55, a couple of arduino panels and sometines an Oculus. I turn on the hub before launching DCS and I turn off at the end of session. No problem with drivers or lag (on W10) I'm flying since 1988 (Flight Simulator 3.0) :pilotfly:
