Toxic Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Hello everybody! I have always been fascinated with SEAD missions in DCS & BMS. So I decided to read, "The Hunter Killers", by Dan Hampton. This book follows the trials of the first ever Wild Weasels going up against some of the top AAA & SAM defenses in the world at the time. http://amzn.com/006237513X :pilotfly::joystick: ~Toxic #CHOPPERLIVESMATTER http://www.aircombatgroup.co.uk/ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
whiteladder Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Have you read it yet? Viper pilot was excellent and I was thinking about getting this.
Aginor Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 The author comes across as a pretty arrogant guy, I disliked that in "Viper Pilot". ....still might get that book. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet

Its a first hand account and a little more mature than Hampton, but not too much, since both are fighter pilots. Difference Ed Rasimus did actually fly in Vietnam. QuiGon Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 (edited) @Toxic I really recommend you to also read his book "Viper Pilot" where he tells his own experience as a SEAD pilot during Desert Storm and other occasions. The first chapter also covers the early days of the Wild Weasels in Vietnam. The author comes across as a pretty arrogant guy, I disliked that in "Viper Pilot". ....still might get that book. He pretty much confirmed the sterotype of a fighter pilot :D Edited December 15, 2015 by QuiGon Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
Aginor Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 (edited) Yes, but I read literally dozens of other books from fighter pilots, and most at least don't write that way. Concerning arrogance Dan Hampton is number two after Chuck Yeager in my list. They really stand out in that, compared to Nigel Ward, Eric Brown, Jack Broughton, Ed Rasimus, Anthony Bendell, Keith Rosenkranz, and some others (EDIT: Like Peter Hunt and Dave Baranek, who write pretty friendly IMO). I know what you mean, you get the impression unless you were a Viper Pilot it wasn`t a good experience being in the same room as Dan Hampton, but I still enjoyed his book. Nigel Ward(don`t mention the RAF in his presence) and even more so Jerry Pook (don`t mention the Royal Navy in his :)) come across to a lesser extent like this in their books. I think some of them are written with the intention of settling some old scores. Strangely people like Eric Brown and Pierre Clostermann come across as quite humble in comparison.
Aginor Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 It is strange how different people react to writing. To me Nigel Ward sounded a bit grumpy but not arrogant or hostile. You may be right though. The extreme opposite is Eric Brown, for example. And I was told (I haven't read his book yet) it is the same with Michael Napier. Really calm and friendly. And yes, I also enjoyed reading all those books, it is really a minor gripe. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Sweep Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I'm gonna have to add all those to the list... Lord of Salt
QuiGon Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) [...] And I was told (I haven't read his book yet) it is the same with Michael Napier. Really calm and friendly. And yes, I also enjoyed reading all those books, it is really a minor gripe. Yeah, I read Napiers book (Tornados over the Tigris) and he's literally the exact opposite of Hampton. He doesn't get tired to mention that there were better pilots than him and how insecure he felt about AAR. :D It was a good read though even though it misses some real action (with one exception), but it gives nice account of the Cold War flying operations in Germany. Edited December 16, 2015 by QuiGon Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
whiteladder Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 If you want the definitive technical account of Sead I would get Iron Hand: Smashing the Enemy's Air Defences by Anthony M. Thornborough and Frank B. Mormillo. Its a brilliant book. Another word on authors, I can get past the writing style in most cases, but I read Hajo Herrmann`s Eagles Wings a little while ago and developed a deep dislike for him as an individual. I kinda regret buying his book, even though it was an interesting read.
