R550 Magic 2 Scan Volumes

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have operated the R550 MAGIC I IRL based on that experience I am seeking to clarify some R550 Magic II details as depicted in the Razbam Mirage 2000.

AUTOSCAN 30 x 30

the R550 Magic I had 2 Auto Scan Volumes. The prime scan volume was a 30deg x 30deg Field of View. (Effectively the whole area inside the canopy bow). A Gyro mirror scanned the volume whilst the seeker remained effectively on missile boresight. If an IR target was detected the Missile seeker head was then driven to the same bearing as the Gyro mirror. If the IR signal was strong enough the seeker head locked This process could take up to 1 second. During the alignment process a chopped 800hz tone was heard. On seeker lock the tone changed to a steady 800Hz tone.

BORESIGHT

To enable specific target lock a HOTAS Boresight option was available this limited the scan to a missile boresight with FOV of 5deg x 5deg. As soon as the boresight button was released the missile returned to the 30 x 30 scan.

So are both these Scan methods available on the R550 Magic II ?

Are these volumes selectable in the Razbam Mirage 2000 ?

I presume in the case of the mirage 2000 that with the radar in STT then the R550 head will also slew to the radar LOS ?

Same goes I presume for Close Combat Vertical mode in that the R550 II Gyro mirror should slew in sequence with the radar Vertical scan ?

MISSILE SAFE/ARMING

Both R550 I and R550 II have a mechanical Safe tag on the launcher. This is a small flap on the launcher rail (visible on the Razbam Mir 2000). This Saftey tag is opened manually on the ground. Missile launch is not possible with the Tag extended. After take off the tag is closed by the Airflow at 150knots. this then permits missile launch once other safety interlocks are made. Once closed the tag remains closed until re opened by maintenace personnel. .... Dont think this is modeled in the Razbam Mirage 2000.

I think the Super R530D has a similar system

No maintenance personnel in DCS so no re-opening the tags, perhaps?

And yes there are such tags (palettes sécurité) for the 530s (implemented as well).

There also is one for the guns (not implemented AFAIK) and one for the countermeasures launchers (not implemented AFAIK).

The Safety tags are working mechanically and close by inspection at around 140Kias. However they arnt (according to other reports) preventing the missiles from being fired on the ground. Mind you there would also be a Weight on Wheels safety interlock

Actually the lack of WOW safety and the speed locks is my fault. I plain dumb forgot about them. They will be available on the next update.

Thanks Zeus for your communication with us.

I have a question regarding upcoming updates. Are you gonna update independently from ED with hot fixes or do you have to send the bins to ED and wait for them to build it ?

Scan volume can be selected via the HOTAS in the Mirage 2000
