heat blur ----- observation/suggestion/idea(?)

saw a post on youtube just now featuring heat blur

here's the idea i had.. heat blur needs to actually be "blurry" - currently, it is not

what i see here is just localized movement - i think they are going after "shimmer" (think, a hot road or a flat hot dry lakebed in the desert - look at an object far off in the distance on the horizon, the image will waver - what you are seeing is called "shimmer")

note... when depth of field is selected in the options, we can get "blurry" visuals in DCS ---- there is an object in the foreground that is sharp and in focus - but in the distance, that scenery is out of focus or "blurry"

since ED has equations or algorithms to make imagery "blurry," i don't see why they don't just put the depth of field "blur" where they're currently putting "shimmer"

i would say don't get rid of shimmer altogether - i think what i'm saying is add "blur" to the current area (volume?) that you are adding shimmer

i have no idea how much work is behind what i'm recommending - or what kind of FR hit we the end users would see - but hey, i'm just tossing out an idea......

I may be wrong, but, I think DCS version 1.2's heat blur effect was better.

I surprised when saw heat blur first time in v1.5...

The heat haze from the engines does not actually produce a blur, only a distortion. What makes it look blurry is the extreme turbulence of the air pushed out of the exhaust and mixing with the air around. In this regard, the 1.5/2.0 implementation is much more realistic than what we had in 1.2.

The only issue I could see is that it can be somewhat too subtle, but if you take off in an A-10 and pause the game, then watch from the side, you can see the haze for several tens of meters behind the aircraft. Making it somewhat more pronounced closer to the exhaust could help with the effect, but I think it is otherwise pretty well done.

I'm also pretty sure adding blur would actually ruin the effect, it would be like looking through frost glass, instead of a heat haze.

I completely agree with you...since LOMAC times, heat blur has always been one of the biggest let downs for graphics in this saga:( ...the thing is, 12 years ago I said myself hey!!, they made something more or less similar to something almost close to what it is suppose to be real heat blur poduced by airplanes so I was happy... but that was 12 years ago...a few month since now I come back and was really surprised on how that ugly effect (that could add SO MUCH if properly done) still being almost the same with the so anticipated EDGE engine!!...I think the "new" effect is better than the original but still being VERY far from a proper and well done affect for me. It just doesnt feel like the real thing that its suppose to imitate.

To make things even worse, for some reason now we dont even have the blur with engines at idle ?¿?¿?¿?...why noy???they never saw a plane idling in the ground???

I just expected A LOT more from EDGE and a real change in game graphics ...specially for heat blur. I think the effect should be a lot more "organic" and should extend way more meters behind the plane (depending on how much throttle you add of course) and should FADE a lot smoother than it does now (now you can clearly see how there is a hard and short distance at which the effect cuts off sharply which never happens in real life). I meant that distance at which the effect works should be larger and with a smoother fade but also, this fade itself shoud be more progressive and should BEND with aircraft movements.

Another great problem is the way the effect works at certain distance...when you see other aircraft taking off and its far from you the effect looks like a weird and too strong distortion "glitch" PURSUING the plane instead of an air effect that leaves behind the plane...

I bet it would be a great thing if the system used to recreate the way the engines smoke behaves (which looks pretty solid to me) could be used also to create the heat blur...it last longer, fades smoother and bends properly when monouvering.

This is the way it should look:

ok!

this is some great discussion - i like this input

i am in NO WAY an expert on this phenomenon - i made an observation and i'm just trying to help (and hopefully not get in the way!) : )

i agree there is probably a difference between the extreme shimmer (distortion was the term used) due to a jet engine and blur that results from a lens that is out of focus - totally different mechanism - that is a valid point

and.. great pic waterman : ) well done!

the guys at ED are doing a great job - they're making changes, tweaking and tuning the system - regardless, it never ceases to amaze me what we're able to achieve on a consumer-grade PC these days - and whats more, they'll continue to improve the system!

just standby for heavy rolls though when they get all the graphics tweaks on line! fraaaaaame raaaaates!haha

Well, I also like to talk about this kind of details because I do believe they make a difference:)

I know ED do a great job with DCS and so I like to push them to make it even better...damn, it would be so great to see a nice, long, smooth and "fluid" heat blur from engines :music_whistling:...hope they do something about that soon :smilewink:

by chance I find a not very common moment in a video where the cam is still and the plane pass in front of it so the way the exhaust behaves is clearer :

from 2:57 to 3:00 (sorry but timelapses in youtube links are not working for me)

wish heat blur look like that in DCS so much :music_whistling: ...nice vid btw

great vid!

and yeah - that really shows the heat blur well

hi again guys, I just wanted to show you a little try to improve the heat blur...the bigger problem seems to be finding a way to eliminate the hard cut off speed at which heat blur just isnt visible which is way too low speed...if someone knows how to deal with that would be great new for all of us...
