I'm about to do a large upgrade to my PC (at least what I consider a large upgrade) which will be upgrading the RAM, Graphics card and Processor. In terms of the processor I wanted to know do I really need to fork out the extra £100 on an i7 4790k or will my preffered choice (because of price) the i5 4690k do just fine. Will I notice a massive difference in the i7 when running DCS compared to the i5? Or should I stick with my gut and go with the i5?

:helpsmilie:

Thanks!

I have the i5 4690k

Couldnt see the point in paying the extra £100 on the i7 4790k

I put the saving towards an Asus Strix GTX980, DCS flies on it.

And lo, Reverend Vegas did say "Take forth unto the infidel the mighty GAU 8 and expend its holy 30MM so that freedom will be brung upon them who knoweth not the joys of BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT"

I had a Gigabyte OC GTX 970

I exchanged it when I found out about the lower end section of the ram being slower.

It was an excellent card but I have OCD and it started to nag at me that I hadnt got what I'd paid for.

They are excellent cards to be honest, I just decided to send mine back and upgrade to the 980 as it was allowable due to me buying before the info got out about the slower ram section.

The main difference in the i5 and the i7

The i7 has hyperthreading, giving 8 virtual cores on a quad core processor, and a slightly larger L2 cache.

For gaming, really not significant, the i5 will perform very well for gaming. In fact I have an i7 and actually have hyperthreading disabled in my bios. My cores run a little cooler and little easier to overclock.

The other difference in the two chips you mentioned is 500 MHz stock core clock. However you could easily make up the difference in the i5 by overclocking a little, very easy to do with the K processor as the multi is unlocked.

Also a GTX 970 would do very well, I am running an EVGA GTX 970 FTW with great results.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO GET THAT i7! The i5 is wonderfully enough for DCS and even better if you overclock it (assuming you haven't already). If you have 8GB of ram or more, I would say that it's already enough for DCS to run smoothly. If you really need the extra RAM to run other things, then go ahead I guess, but you don't really need the extra RAM for DCS (I have 8GB @ 1866 CAS 9 DDR3 and it works well). Finally, use all the money you have on the GPU! Since the change to DX11, DCS is now beautifully GPU optimised than ever before and you need to put all your eggs in the GPU basket. If you have the cash, go for a 980 Ti, otherwise, a 980 or 390 or 970 will do you wonders. Hope this helps! (And then there's me stuck on a 750 Ti hahaha :helpsmilie: )
