Using the Magic II without Radar? Possible?

Hi, need some help. Apparently it is possible to use the Magic II without radar but so far I've not yet been successful with getting a lock. Can anyone explain the procedures for me, Im probably doing something wrong.

1) I turn on the Master Arm switch

2) Select the Magic 2 missile

3) The buzzing sound is engaged

After lining up a target on the hud, I can't seem to get the seeker to lock, do I need to press the "lock" button, is there no autolock implemented yet? Some help would be nice here, Im probably not pointing the bird right. I need to get the enemy into the circle right?

Also am I right in assuming that there will be no DLZ displayed (like on the FC3 fighters) unless I also have a radar lock on the target?

Let me just point out that I can get the Magic2 to lock fine with the close range radar modes.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

Without radar, the seeker head will not slew towards the target. Therefore you have to get the target in the boresight FOV of the missile.

Apparently there is a bug - the missile's boresight is not the small circle atm, but rather at the position of the gun cross. So, maneuvre gun cross over the target and you should get a lock.

Will it lock automatically or do i need to press lock on my hotas?

What i like to do is put the Mirage in to longitude mode with the v key , quick lock and fire , that way you dont need to look at the radar , works very well .

I am aware of that mode and have been using it and all the other close range radar modes, however sometimes it's very useful not to alert the enemy that you are right on his six (radar emission off) and that you sent a heater right up his tail pipe. Although to be honest, with the extremely short range of the Magic II that is a limited option at best.

I've had the Magic lock on without radar even without it being within' the FOV of the seeker.

Having the target somewhere in front of you or within' the confinements of your HUD you will get a tone depending on your positioning from the bandit.

However - without a lock and having two targets within' your immediate front - it will lock on to whoever it pleases. So it may tone in on a friendly if it wants to.

It depends on the situation - if I have the time to switch to Bore Sight CAC mode - then I'll lock. If I get a tone before switching to CAC mode then I'll just take that chance. Still same results really. I don't know if the enemy hears the tone of a lock though if you do lock him with a radar.

at the moment the missile is not slaved to the radar.

So a radar lock in no way helps with guiding the Magic II atm.

The only way to get a lock is to point the nose on the aircraft at the target.

So simply turn on the master arm select the magic and place the target close to he Cross in the upper part of the hud.

You should then get a good tone from the missile seeker once you are close enough.

When implemented you will be able to uncage the missile head and move the seeker around to lock targets up that are not directly infront of the missile aswell as the abillity to slave the seeker head to the radar so the radar can tell the seeker where to look to find a target.

but for now you have to aim the entire aircraft to let the missile get a good tone.

Picture belows shows a target lock with the radar off (both radar and radar screen) and also shows the cross that is the best reference for where to put the enemy to get a lock at the moment.

(circle is the target and show the missile has him locked)

For the first few days that I flew this plane I hadn't learned the radar and only focused on a-g and using the Magics on some Migs. I then learned the radar and didn't really notice any difference in function, like mattebubben said, it's not implemented yet.

But it seems that if you have radar lock while using the Magic, it will be tell you when you are in the non escape zone, could be wrong though

yea the radar will give range information so you can determin the best range to launch.

So its still usefull to lock the enemy with the radar it just does not help with the locking or tracking of the Magic II.
