B2Blain Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I was considering building a system with a 4690K given a system with an i7 2600. It has a micro ATX motherboard. I thought I would save $200 and try to build a system with the 2600. I noticed that the benchmark for the 2600 is higher than the 4690k. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2600+%40+3.40GHz I want to get a GTX970 video card and started looking for a new motherboards. There were not that many available at Amazon. I don't know if the benchmarks I found translates to DCS, but I assume it at least will not be slower than the i5. I am wondering if it is even worth it to try or build a system around an older CPU. Thanks, Blain
SharpeXB Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Check out this site for comparing CPUs http://cpuboss.com For DCS and most sims you will want to look at the single-thread performance score. Like is shown here https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
RoflSeal Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) i7 2600 is not overclockable whilst the i5 4690K is. DCS benefits a lot from overclocking and doesn't take advantage of hyperthreading that i7 CPUs have (Basically DCS performance doesn't increase after 4 threads). So 4690K is the better choice for DCS, especially if you can OC it, however if you are planning to run at stock speeds, the 2600 should be adequate. Btw here are DCS benchmarks comparing 2600K and 4670K at stock speeds (with a GTX 970). 4670K and 4690K are basically the same chip but with different Thermal Interface Material, so with 4690K you should be able to slightly overclock better. 2600K is running at stock speeds so it should have similar performance to 2600 And more benchmarks http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=157374 Edited February 19, 2016 by RoflSeal

Trust me, it's a blast!
B2Blain Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Thanks, Guys! Good stuff. I don't plan on over clocking if I don't have to. I would still have to sink some money into a system for the i7 2600 - motherboard and dram. I'd only be saving the cost of the cpu. It probably doesn't make sense to sink money into an older format.
