(Preferably at high settings..)

I'm planning to upgrade my PC

my current specs are as follows.

Pentuim 4 @ 2.8 GHz

MSI 865PE Neo2-P Motherboard (Overclocking possible?)

512 mb RAM

ATI 9200 Radeon video card

AC97 Realtek

120 GB total Hard drive space.

with these, i got around 13-25 fps on average filled missions, mostly made by the community and the default missions, sometimes fps drops below 10.. I already had the major FPS tweaks at these FPS, 1.12a tweak, bobocop's cloud & such..

my LO:FC settings are generally low with Effects & Blur OFF, Shadows all planar, civ traffic on & 16-bit colors.

with overcast weather my only max fps is 15 over land & 17 when at sea.

what i want is to use the higher graphic settings with decent or faster fps.

I'm planning to increase RAM to 1 GB maybe, will these enable me to use the higher graphics settings without fps impact? or do i need a video card update/change? or are there other solutions?

You need a better video card.

An AGP card; X800XT/Pro or 6800Ultra will be a huge improvement; you may need to look to ebay for one.

If you're looking at better than that, PCI-Express is your only solution.

In that case you'd want to consider an entire component upgrade.

1 gig of RAM is a 'must', 2 gig even will help you even more.

Agreed. Concerning video card I would prefer 7800GS for AGP. Now it comes out with the new G71 core which is well overclockable and it's the best nVidia choice for AGP slot. But if you can spend more for upgrade, there are brand new Intel's Core2 CPUs and PCI Express cards way better than AGP ones so it's all up to your budget. All in all Lomac needs large RAM, fast CPU and powerful graphics to run really smoothly on the highest settings...

You can find some FPS tweaks here: http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=77#cat

The other most important thing is "scene" settings in lockon options. That is the biggest FPS eater. Other tips, put mirrors, reflections off. Also putting the sound off with the button in lockon options will save you 5 fps. But i guess you want to fly with the sound on.

Anyway, i have the same computer for the greatest part and when all my settings are on the lowest possible i have an average of 60 fps.

With my current budget, i think the only feasible option for me is additional RAM, i already checked the price of the AGPs & PCIs on the net, most likely it would be a bit lower in our local PC Shops which is quite high for me.

if i add another 512 mb, how much fps gain would the PC provide in Lock On?

I dont know about you, but let me say what worked for me. I used to have 512mb of ram. It sux. I went to 1mb of ram and in lockon almost 7 months ago my fps doubled, just with more ram. I wouldnt be surprised for you. (i now have 2 gb, got more as a gift.) And just to let you know, if there is anything that you want to change the most to help lockon, you might want to look at cpu's. For me anyway, that is the bottleneck. And even imo i have a pretty good cpu. Although, i know maybe you dont have money to do this, just get what you feel you can. If you are hunting for prices, go to newegg.com, they are great.

Read my spec below. I've got no problem with this.

errr....what was the point of this reply, other than to flat out ignorrently rub it in, or gloat?

Not entirely.

I went from a 9700 Pro to an X800XL on a P4 2.8 and only a little happened.

Better, yes . . . . but when I upgraded from the 2.8 to an AMD 64-bit 3700+, THEN impressive things happened.

CPU power HELPS ;)

Buy a simpe soundcard, it will give you +10-15FPS, because with AC97 the CPU works with sound....

Thanks for the replies mates~

i think changing my cards is bit impossible for now, Processors..na-ah..

i'll just try RAM..

so if add some RAM and use my current graphic settings in LO FC (all low except Textures) could there be a significant increase of fps from 512mb to 1GB?

just guessing...

RAM for FPS

VGA/PCI Cards for Graphic quality...

How about overclocking? can that be considered?
Take a look at my sig. My Lock On settings are medium to high, mirros off, 1600X1200 resolution.

Have you scanned for spyware? How about turning indexing off on your HD?

Significant? I'm afraid not.

Moderate? Maybe.

When I was buying my current PC, RAM shipped to me first, so for several days I used it in my old computer (Athlon 1800+, 512MB RAM, GeForce3Titanium 128MB).

Compared to 512MB, I haven't noticed great imrovement in FPS with 1GB, except the ability to set scenery to high (trees, oh those beautiful trees :joystick: ) with shadows set to active planar without FPS drop. That was impossible with 512MB.

Anyway, some huge campaign missions were still unplayable. But you have faster processor than I had, so maybe things will be better. :)

To say it simple:

More RAM allows more static objects (trees, buildings, vehicles) to be seen. Huge aerial battles with many planes, missiles inbound and AI - that's processor's domain, but RAM is also important here.

Water, overcast, fire, haze: they depend on your graphics card, and RAM has nothing to do with them.

ФрогФут is right, sound card will help too.

what do you mean by indexing?

Click on My Computer. Then right click on your HD, and click on "properties". At the bottom, you will see "Allow indexing service to index this drive to allow for fast file searching." By default, there is a check-mark in the box next to that. Uncheck that, hit apply, and follow the system dialog to remove indexing from the entire drive. This made a HUGE performance difference for me, not only in LOMAC, but elsewhere as well. BTW...I haven't noticed that my file searches are any slower than they were when this performance robber was enabled.
