Raven_Morpheus Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) Hey all I know, I know, I should get rudder pedals. Problem is I've experimented with rudder pedals, I bought, and subsequently sold, Saitek Pro Flight rudder pedals. And due to the nature of my space (an L shaped box room with the main space being no bigger than 6'wx8'l) that is also my bedroom, and having no other space to permanently setup a desk or gaming rig I found it impossible to get motivated to setup every time my pedals, fold out lawn chair and stand(s) for my HOTAS, thus I don't play my flight sims unless I can sit on my bed and use a twist throttle (or rudder rocker as I used to have on my Saitek X45). Basically I sit on my 3' wide pine bed with my monitors alongside of it facing me, so I'm kind of sat at a 45 degree angle to the corner of the bed which is up against a wall. I tried creating a wooden rig I can put on my bed to sit on and attach my HOTAS to, and lean up against the wall for "storing" it, but it was highly uncomfortable. Anyhow, I now want to upgrade to a Warthog, pirmarily because my Saitek X52 is at least a year old and it's just never been all that great for me. I'd settle for a Saitek Rhino, but I feel the Warthog would be better. Problem is (as far as I know the Saitek Rhino is the same) there's no twist rudder on the Warthog. I primarily fly Helicopters in DCS but do dabble in WW2 aircraft in IL2 Sturmovik 1946 and Cliffs of Dover. So, I'm wondering, is there an axis or rocker I could use on the throttle that is as easily accessible as the rudder rocker on the Saitek X45 throttle? Any ideas on this would be appreciated. Sokol1_br Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 For a good rudder control you need a axis - is possible achieve a good "thumb rudder" control with CH PRO throttle mini-stick, after some training. In Warthog are "Slew/TCD" in front of of right grip, accessible by (left) middle finger, but this control is not "pivotable" - in 3D - like a mini-stick, but slide - in 2D - left/right (and up/down) and his operation is hatted for the intended function, be "TDC"... The other controls are HAT (digital buttons) and the axis on wheel on base, besides awkward position for control rudder, move back and forth. Probable you achieve better rudder control if get a PS2 like gamepad and use his mini-stick for rudder control. Need find a way to place near the throttle to became accessible. BTW - VKB T-Rudder is a compact rudder solution, easy to be stored in vertical position.
1.JaVA_Platypus Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 According to this pic. There is a rudder axis on the X55 Joystick. :) Happy Flying! :pilotfly:
Raven_Morpheus Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) I wonder (on either Saitek or Thrustmaster) do the throttles when used separately report as two individual axis? If so I could use one as rudder - I don't think, other than the odd occasion I fly the A-10 in DCS, that I've ever flown anything I need two throttle levers for! Sokol1_br Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) Yes, you can use the left throttle as individual axis for other functions - if overcome the fact that this axis have no center position for reference to center the rudder. Warthog Throttle has 5 axis. 2 - in throttles 2 - in TDC/slew 1 - in right side of base wheel with lever (friction in real throttle) Edited February 26, 2016 by Sokol1_br
TomOnSteam Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) I have a warthog, and it's a fantastic stick, but I wouldn't recommend if you're mostly flying helicopters because the spring is very strong. I can't see it working on a bed. Also the throttle is very heavy, it needs a desk or platform to sit on. You can mod it of course by taking out the main spring and the weights I suppose. Another option might be the VKB rudder pedals. They work differently and I can see them working on a bed if you have something to lean them against. FeistyLemur Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 For helicopters with the warthog just get an extension. I use a 10cm extension from sahaj in Poland. Most reviewers who fly choppers say the 15cm extension is ideal. I got a 10 because I wanted a balance. http://warthog-extensions-by-sahaj.com/ Trust me when I say order a set of MFG crosswinds, you'll never regret. 7000 times better experience flying a chopper. Do whatever you have to in order to be able to use real rudder pedals. http://mfg.simundza.com/blog/
