ChoSeungWan Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Is there any chance that we could get a more 'analog' or 'cathode ray' look to HUDs? And make it look more like its projected onto glass instead of in your face? To me it seems superimposed at the moment. Could this be done with picture-in-picture or just making the light fuzzy or adding subtle movement? Also I would like to see something similar with the glass cockpits. I'm not even sure how pronounced this effect is in the real thing because images can deceive, but if it can be done I would see it as much more immersive and make the HUDs look as cool as the rest of the cockpit. P3CFE Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 HUD in real life ..are projected in infinity, don' t ask me how it works but in the sim it is as in real life.
Nooch Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I have had several occasions to look at real military HUDs (most notably in the C-17) and I must say the ones in DCS definitely look like the ones in real life. They don't flicker when you look at them in person. They only do so on camera footage. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

King_Hrothgar Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 No, the reflector gunsights in the first World War were also displayed at infinity and didn't flicker (unless the bulb was loose of course). The flickering you see in recordings of old CRT's and HUD's is caused by the camera not being synchronized with the device being recorded. If you record your monitor at 24 fps (old school video camera rate), I promise you you're 60Hz monitor will also appear to flicker. Now imagine it's running at 24Hz instead of 60, you will see tons of flickering on the recording that simply isn't there on the actual device.
ChoSeungWan Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Sorry, I didn't mean an actual pronounced flicker. I'm aware of videos creating a flicker effect. I meant slight fluctuations like you see in those old school ground radar screens or analog oscilloscopes. I noticed Leatherneck mentioned implementing 'Custom shaders for enhanced visual fidelity (e.g. CRT Screen representation)' here http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=146655 wondering if this has anything to do with what I mean. EDIT: Think i've confused people with misuse of the words infinity and flicker. I meant more 'in your face' and suggested an unnoticable flicker as a way to make the light look more glowy or something. Edited March 25, 2016 by ChoSeungWan

I remember last year they said in the 476th podcast (available here) that they want to implement this feature for the Mig-21 radar screen. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
