So I usually arm my Eagle with AMRAAM-s, either 4 or 6 of them. When I fire the first one the max range is at around 30 (ish) miles. Then I can fire - at non maneuvering targets.

Sometimes however, when I switch to AMRAAMs a different kind of range appears on the right side of my hud, indicating a max range of around 12 miles. I checked if maybe I selected an AIM-7 accidentally, but no.

What is this all about? I can't figure out what I messed up.

The launch range is dynamic. Range depends on your own and your target speed, aspect, altitude.

Yep. An example:

Your target is at the origin, nose facing along the Y axis. You'll see that when he is coming towards you, you can launch the missile at greater range than if he was running away from you.

A-haa, so the F-15's system automatically re-calculates these distances based on aspect? Wow, it's smart!!

The system needs to solve the intercept problem if it wants to have any chance of guiding the AIM-120 to its activation point. Might as well show some of the data to the user as well. :)
