Hi,

I'm relatively new to BVR flightsims, but I spent "thousands of hours" in WW2 multiplayer scenarios, mostly IL2 and CoD.

Since the beginning of the year I love to fly within DCS, the F-15 is the plane I'm most familiar with and I much prefer the 104th Phoenix server.

I'm now able to score a few kills here and there with the AIM-120 and bring the plane back home, but there is one Misson, in which I get into difficulties.

I'm talking about the AIM-7 vs. R-27 Mission.

Whatever I do, I have no chance in a BVR environment with the AIM-7 against a R-27ER equipped fighter.

Even if I fly 20k ft. higher with 600kn hot aspect... no chance.

It feels like the R-27 must be twice as fast, as this fu... AIM-7... :(

So, do I make something wrong? Do you have any tips, how to deal with that scenarios?

Thx a lot for your replies...

AIM-7 should be pitted against the R-27R to start with not the ER version, which as you noticed has much longer legs.

'Good news' is that guidance is far from being bulletproof so you can still defeat early shots with proper defensive BVR maneuvers (cranking, notching...etc) and wait for the target to get within effective range. There are lot of tactics that could be used, this was just the basic idea to get you headed the right way.

I also assume you are aware AIM-7 is a semi-active missile, thus needs support from the radar all the way.

Thx for your quick replies.. :)

I searched the net for a bit more data and the R-27ER is indeed much faster than the AIM-7...

What I found:

Type..........Start of ....................... max TAS ...................max range(hot)

...... ......operational Service ...........@ 25k ft. ...................@ 25k ft.

AIM-7M .....1977 ............................1544kn ......................22NM

R-27R ........1987 ............................1831kn ......................19NM

R-27ER .......1990 ...........................2386kn .......................30NM

AIM-120B ...1994 .............................2212kn ......................22NM

So I think FLANKERATOR is right, that in an 80's scenario the "R" Version would be the more reasonable setup.

I think I have to learn more of this missile avoidance stuff... :(

That mission on the 104th server could be one of the best, it's unfortunately the only one with a rational plane set for Red (Russian) and Blue (NATO).

The ER in-game, IIRC, has more drag then the 7, but it also has a crazy long burn time and a lot of thrust...It goes pretty darn far...

Really, your only option is to play proper BVR as a flight of coordinated humans...

Maneuver and look for unobserved entry opportunities!!
