tflash Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I bought a mid-range portable; a Dell D620 with a Core Duo T2500 2Ghz processor 997 MHz 1 Gb Ram and an NVidia NVS 110M 256 Mb (GeForce Go 7300), and a standard Sata 7200 RPM disk This is by any means a mid-level, bread-and-butter Office PC. Nice to see how this relates to gaming. In fact, performance with both Lockon FC 1.12a and WOE is more than adequate. You can play the games carefree without FPS ever dropping below 20 FPS at a resolution of 1280*800 at 16/9 widescreen. WOE at high settings with shadows and clouds, Lockon with somewhat more than medium settings, including advanced haze and high effects and textures. Like always, visual quality with the NVidia is very good, FPS is of course modest, but nowhere a problem. Interesting is that my previous Mid-size portable, a Dell D600 with 2Gb Ram and 1.7 GHz Pentium M with ATI radeon 128 Mb was *NOT* sufficient for Lockon. Mid-size hardware is reaching Lockon, so we badly need a new version, fully exploiting shaders 2.0, DirectX 9.0c and Directsound. Lockon just might become popular otherwise. Even without a flyable Hornet! ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

ericinexile Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 LockOn is beautiful enough. For once I'd like to settle into at least a year or two of decent frame-rates and playability before being saddled by next version that makes my once raging fast PC, a pc probably capable of simulating thermonuclear detonations, come grinding to a halt. Smokin' Hole My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.

I seriously doubt it. If you don't have blazing-fast ultrarealistic water and fire effects, you're out of the market rather sooner than later. Decent support of Directsound also would bring performance gains, and increased FPS. I find the BS adventure cunning and bold, and flying a helo will radically encourage the need for further graphics enhancements. We will also have to assess the impact of the upcoming "Storm of War: Battle of Britain" 1C title, as it will shape the market expectations. If they stay well behind the current Lockon, I agree with you. Otherwise, not! Simmers come in many brands. I'm with those who want to feel the heat of the Pentium processor and GPU's flowing out of the fans. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Well, optimizations of the graphics to produce better framerates/smoother gameplay is a different matter entirely. That I wouldn't mind. I also wouldn't mind low level terrain graphic optimizations to make LOBS prettier to the eyes. Other than that, I much rather have things like a working, realistic APG-63/AIM-120C hunter-killer combo or much, much smarter AI than any kind of graphics improvement. Just look at the combat flight sim market, and where LOMAC stands currently in the beauty department. It's Numero One, no exceptions.
Fufunka Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Sorry for the trollish post, but Lockon will become numero uno once they enable export view of ABRIS and Flir TV over network as MSFS, Falcon and others have..
