I've been watching a few youtubes of the Gazelle, and I see rockets /missiles being fired, from a hovering state, without any hint of "recoil" on the helicopter. No bounce, no hint of yaw ?

Is this realistic ?

Yes it is. The HOT3 missile is not fired from a 'chamber' like a pistol or rifle is. The superheated gases can escape through a port in the back of the launch tube. With no hot gases pushing against the rear of the tube, no recoil is expierenced.

I am not an aeronautics expert but i know a little of ammunitions... Let me ask you a question. Does a Karl gustav, rpg, stinger a recoil? Well the answer is not really. Or not very much. The launcher tube is open in both extremes of the tube launcher. So there is not the 3rd law of physics. Acction, reaction stuff with the helicopter. Guns, mortars have.

Recoil is produced by the pressure of the gasses pushing back the weapon system. If the weapon is open... Only the weight balance can be affected. But the HOT is only around 30 kg I think.

I migth be wrong anyway

The Carl Gustav is pretty much a recoilless rifle. There's no whoosh or rockety behavior at all, it's just a big BLAM when you fire it...followed by a kick in your face :) But is that recoil? No, not really as 80% of the charge goes out behind you. But the sheer punch, it's a nice feeling. We were taught to always have our mouths open when firing...

Ahem, back to topic - rockets or missiles fired from a helicopter shouldn't give any recoil at all.

Exactly that is what I meant...

I've actually fired the Carg Gustav, and the recoil is almost non-existent.

Here is a video from my troop back in 2008.
