joebloggs Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I am planning on getting a 4k Television and a Geforce 1080, but only if I'm going to get good FPS in DCS. Do you reckon the new Geforce 1080 will give use good FPS in 4k or not? Cpu Skylake 6700 overclocked to 4.6 Ghz motherboard Gifabyte Gaming 7 Ram 16GB DDR3
Gladman Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Guys are getting excellent fps in 4k with gtx980s so there's no reason to believe you won't with a 1080. i9 9900K @ 5.1Ghz - ASUS Maximus Hero XI - 32GB 4266 DDR4 RAM - ASUS RTX 2080Ti - 1 TB NVME - NZXT Kraken 62 Watercooling System - Thrustmaster Warthog Hotas (Virpil Base) - MFG Crosswind Pedals - Pimax 5K+ VFA-25 Fist Of The Fleet [sigpic]http://forums.eagle.ru/signaturepics/sigpic99190_2.gif[/sigpic] Virtual Carrier Strike Group 1 | Discord
Alterscape Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 The only review I've seen with actual numbers so far is from Ars Technical UK. Looks like the contemporary AAA titles are running around 40-50 FPS with all graphical settings maxed out. DCS tends to be CPU-limited, so I suspect if you're getting good performance now at a lower resolution, a card upgrade ought to allow you to maintain similar-ish performance at higher res?
StrongHarm Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) I'm averaging 80-100fps in 4k with 2 980ti in both ver of DCS in max settings, but I also have an 8 (physical) core Intel 5960X extreme processor overclocked to 5ghz, which I think makes a significant difference for DCS. From what I've read the GTX1080 is only a small fraction faster than the 980ti in games that aren't coded to take advantage of the new architecture. There are also reports that having an SLI setup of 980tis are still better for 4k and VR setups, as a single card (even the 1080) is not up to the task of running apps in 4k at the highest quality settings. The standard 980 in SLI is actually *worse* for VR than a single 980, since VR isn't fully optimized for SLI and it doesn't have the architecture that the 980ti or 1080 does. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-review/1100-6439863/ Edited May 19, 2016 by StrongHarm It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
xaoslaad Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 You don't get stutter in 2.0 with SLI? There's a whole thread of people with that issue. I ripped my second 970 out and gave up. And that article you linked showed the 1080 keeping up with if not outpacing dual 980's at 4k so that's kinda awesome. Not to mention I'm personally happy to see an amount of RAM that exceeds what DCS is saying it's using these days as well. I've seen DCS claim over 6G which maxes out even 980's... If you have dual 980's and they're working well you'll get nothing from a single 1080 I don't think, but for the rest of us one option is waaaaaay cheaper than the other....

I know my twin 680 4 gigs now double the video ram of the cards and makes things run better, but Im not sure if the OS running faster or what will have an effect on DCSW. Thanks for giving me any info on whats what with this Mike
xaoslaad Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 It doesn't double the RAM. SLI cards have a copy of the same thing in RAM. You effectively have 4G, not 8G...
StrongHarm Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) xaoslaad, yes there's a big difference between 980s in SLI and 980ti in SLI. The 1080 is significantly better than 2-980s, but only fractionally better than a single 980ti. It has to do with the architecture difference between the 980 and 1080/980ti. With that said, once games start to take advantage of the new efficient coding features within the 1080, it could be as much as 20% better than the 980ti instead of 2% better. I don't have any stuttering in SLI, it's smooth as butter. I used Fish's post to configure SLI. His rig is just 2600k@4.5gHz, 2xGTX970's. 16gb ram and he posts a video in the same thread showing how smooth his method gets 2.0 to run in SLI. I recommend his method.. and also his youtube videos.. dude has good ideas and a pleasant accent heheh. ctguy1955, it's my opinion that DCS runs much smoother on Windows10. You can read extensive philosophical debate over this topic here on the forums. I've been in technology since Windows 3.11, and I was a tester for ED for a few years, so I have an intimate knowledge of both platforms. But at the end of the day an educated opinion is still just an opinion. I haven't taken the time to collect empirical data. joebloggs, I'm using the JU7500 and it looks *outstanding* when you set it up correctly. I've run it side by side with a Samsung monitor made for gaming, and it looks just as good. Both for DCS/games and regular work. Here's my post on it: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=157901 Edited May 19, 2016 by StrongHarm It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
