BattleAxes Skinner Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Hi all, Although I joined back in 2010 but am still a noob, took a long hiatus during the LockOn, FC1, FC2 days without ever truly making an effort to learn and play...but the new avatar in the form of DCS World 1.5 & 2.0 has just clicked with me and I finally wish to take this up seriously now :smile wink: A big shout out to ralfidude, ironhand & linebacker for their awesome videos...they're truly inspiring :thumb: So, like any other noob have tons of questions to be able to quickly catch-up with the pros here. Would be hugely grateful for any/all insights you guys could provide. During taxi and take-off, i always drift either to the right or left and have to correct through the rudders. Is there something wrong in my setup? Not at all conversant in the navigation lingo e.g. bogey bearing 123, angels etc. What does it all mean? Is there a comprehensive tutorial that I could either watch or read to get it to make sense to me? During gameplay, in the f3 view mode, I get stuttering/freezing but over a period of time i.e. over 5th - 6th view it eases out and finally disappears. Why would this be? Hardware? How important is trimming? Have never paid any attention to this and have been flying on default settings? How would trimming help and when and how to do it? The ECM & R-23ER on a SU27 seem to be utterly useless. The F15, F16 AIs seem to be burning-through me with AMRAAMS and R-23ER never hits unless am firing at non manoeuvring targets like the predator drone? Am I not using them right? Is there like a detailed tutorial on this? I have tons more questions, but let's just start with these. Again, would be hugely grateful to the pros here to take the time out to help. Thanks in advance! || नभ स्पर्शं दीप्तम् || - Touch the sky with glory
QuiGon Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 hi and welcome, some remarks: During taxi and take-off, i always drift either to the right or left and have to correct through the rudders. Is there something wrong in my setup? What aircraft? Not at all conversant in the navigation lingo e.g. bogey bearing 123, angels etc. What does it all mean? Is there a comprehensive tutorial that I could either watch or read to get it to make sense to me?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiservice_tactical_brevity_code How important is trimming? Have never paid any attention to this and have been flying on default settings? How would trimming help and when and how to do it? Depends on the aircraft. Trimming is very important for older aircraft that do not have fly by wire or other flight stability/augmentation systems (all WW2 aircraft, both korean war aircraft and the MiG-21) and all helicopters. Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
msalama Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Is there something wrong in my setup? Not necessarily at all. How're the winds, for one? And what're you flying, a prop or a jet? There're many things to take into account, so give us a little more and maybe we're able to help you. Cheers :) The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.
msalama Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 How would trimming help and when and how to do it?In principle, you'd want to trim if controlling the AC on a straight(ish) flightpath entails having to hold the stick somewhere instead of having it in the neutral / middle / "natural" position. Sorry if this is a less than optimal explanation :) The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.
BattleAxes Skinner Posted June 16, 2016 Author Posted June 16, 2016 Am only flying the SU27 || नभ स्पर्शं दीप्तम् || - Touch the sky with glory
msalama Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Am only flying the SU27 OK, you should just trim for neutral then. Also, check for any duplicate controller assignments, at least if you're experiencing something that "cannot be" so to speak. S! The DCS Mi-8MTV2. Bond 42 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 plus the L-39, the Hawk and the C101. As I'm interested mainly in the FLYING part of the sim I wouldn't buy any FBW add on because (as IRL) flying a FBW plane completely removes the feeling for the plane and degrades the planes to fighting and aiming tools. FBW doesn't mean it removes the feeling from the flight controls... Most planes will give artificial feel..as the pilot you really wouldn't know much difference when flying.
BattleAxes Skinner Posted June 18, 2016 Author Posted June 18, 2016 :D Just funnin' ya :) it's been really long :) || नभ स्पर्शं दीप्तम् || - Touch the sky with glory
Bond 42 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Artificial feel is something completely different. I'm not talking about flight control feel. Due to the FBW system you can't feel what the plane itself does, you simply point it in a certain direction and the computers are performing the desired task. At least that's my own RW experience with FBW planes. Fixed wing aircraft with FBW, you do feel.. Literally like a normal plane. That's from my experience flying them. Maybe RW is different...
PapaSmoke Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 In most FBW planes you can yank on the stick all you like and not worry about G or AoA too though, to be fair. And I have to admit I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between an aircraft with conventional powered controls and a FBW machine (e.g. Typhoon) in terms of control feel. Are the FBW aircraft you have flown mostly western or eastern design? Love to hear more if they're Eastern Bloc - I have no experience at all of them!
BattleAxes Skinner Posted June 19, 2016 Author Posted June 19, 2016 Hate jargon and hate to come across as daft...but what exactly is RW? || नभ स्पर्शं दीप्तम् || - Touch the sky with glory
PapaSmoke Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 @bbrz just re-read what you wrote earlier and I get what you're saying now. I definitely agree with regard to the actual physical feelings (G etc) in the real thing. What types have you flown? My only experience of FBW is Typhoon.
Bond 42 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 (edited) Questions questions questions!!! Well, as you are sitting in front of a (or even more) monitor(s) and not in a real plane, there's no feel at all of course. That's why I referred to RW planes/flying. Furthermore you can't feel any g-force, you don't have to 'listen' to the plane as it approaches the limits of its envelope etc. With FBW planes in the sim you can simply yank the stick all the way back without having to worry about exceeding maximum G or AoA. That makes flying in the sim even more video game like. Again, I'm only talking about the flying part and not the fighting part, for the latter a FBW plane would be much better suited in most cases. As DCS is IMO simply the most realistic flight sim, I enjoy the flying part a lot :) I took RW to mean Helo.. Lol sorry. Not real world. I am a real world pilot who flew FBW aircraft. That's where my comments are coming from, not from a sim lol. Agreed on what you're saying then... That being said though, not every FBW aircraft was built to keep you within those envelopes..
