Bersagliere81 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Hi there I just bought the MiG21 and practicing A2A. I think I have learned the radar part, however, there's something I can't get with IR locks. First of all, the pipper doesn't get any smaller than that (you can see it in the screenshot) and I could see it gets smaller than that. Secondly, it just doesn't move. I believe it is supposed to stick on the target as soon as it gets a lock, but it doesn't. I do get the lock tone and with R-60M I can get that green light. I tried with other IR missiles (R-13 maybe? I am still not used to russian weapons), but the pipper just doesn't move, they don't even get the green light. Just the lock tone. What am I doing wrong? I can tell you the armament switches are all up, and everything is set as the screenshot | A-10C | MiG-21bis | Hawk T1.A | L-39 Albatros | F-5E | Ka-50 | Mi-8 | NTTR | CA | SU27 | M2000C | F-86F | AV-8B | F/A-18C | Mig 15 | Mig 19| Specs Intel i7-9700k msi GTX 2060 Gaming Z msi Z390 Gaming PLUS 16gb RAM Hotas Warthog
grunf Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) The pipper is not supposed to follow the target, that's how it works in a real plane. There is however the option in the special menu, which makes the pipper follow the target. The green light (I assume you mean that on the right of the sight) illuminates only for R-60 missiles (the bottom one), and RS-2US (top and middle ones). There's also a radar lock light, left of the sight. edit:your screenshot shows you have the r-60 locked. Edited June 29, 2016 by grunf
Bersagliere81 Posted June 29, 2016 Author Posted June 29, 2016 Correct, thank you very much. Now it is working "properly". What about the size of the pipper? Is it related to the type of missile too? I found this image with google. It is not very clear, but you can see it is very small https://i.ytimg.com/vi/q0xzSfi-kNg/maxresdefault.jpg | A-10C | MiG-21bis | Hawk T1.A | L-39 Albatros | F-5E | Ka-50 | Mi-8 | NTTR | CA | SU27 | M2000C | F-86F | AV-8B | F/A-18C | Mig 15 | Mig 19| Specs Intel i7-9700k msi GTX 2060 Gaming Z msi Z390 Gaming PLUS 16gb RAM Hotas Warthog
grunf Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 In A2A, size of the pipper is used for gun aiming. In a nutshell, you dial the target's wingspan, put the target in the circle and shoot.
Frederf Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) The diamond ring should never be that small ever. Its physical minimum size is 22 mil. In that picture it's like 2. That picture must be from an old version before the minimum size was introduced. Unfortunately the current diamond ring minimum diameter is ~38mil instead of 22. It looks like the ring size is 22 mil but somehow the range-span relationship isn't working right? I mean if you set the manual range to 1000m and set the span to 22m the ring should just begin to grow. The diamond ring does not change behavior based on type of AA missile but it will increase above minimum size by combination of range to target (AUTO - radar or 600m if no lock; MAN - by throttle grip {300m if grip rotated to minimum}) and SPAN knob setting. The result being that the diamond ring will be the appropriate size for the entered range and span provided that size is not less than the minimum. I could not get this to function when using an active radar lock and closing to short range with a large span set. Also I noted that the needle represented 600m by the manual/non-missile scale instead of the missile scale when in MSL-AUTO and a missile selected. Edited July 2, 2016 by Frederf
