I have an Intel I5-2500 @ 3.30 GHZ and two regular monitors that I run at a total of 3840x1060 and I mainly play flight simulator games (DCS and the Superbug). The price of a 6GB GTX 1060 is not that much cheaper than a good GTX 1070 (about $150), so the question is-will a 1060 be sufficient or should I just go up to a 1070? The extra $150 will not break the bank, but I don’t want to go to the 1070 if it is foolish. I have no plans to upgrade to a VR or better monitors (but one never knows).

Any thoughts?

I just upgraded to an MSI Gtx1070 from a 970 with an i5 2500k oc'd to 4.3. If you don't use vr you at all you should a very good results. Before I plugged my rift cv1 in, I checked some fps in Vegas. Where I was getting 60 fps in full settings with the 970 I was getting 95 plus with the 1070. Although I now fly exclusively with the rift I'm only getting 35 on full settings at low altitude down the strip (but try not to fly too low - gives me an awful woozy feeling in helos). So I'd say get the best you can afford anyways

I'd go with the 1070 since budget isn't a big deal. You'll be able to turn up the quality settings and enable more options such as as anti-aliasing and shadows etc and still have things run smoothly.

Even if those sort of things are really interesting to you, I'd still go with the 1070 because it will remain relevant longer. So that $150 buys you the extra time if that makes sense.

(or you can hang onto the $150 for now, and upgrade earlier, I guess it doesn't matter so much).

I would suggest a 1060 and a used 2500k cpu that you can overclock to >4 GHz. You'll see that DCS is very much single core speed dependent. If overclocking isn't an option, then go for the 1070.

Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.

Think that will be my next upgrade as well. 1070 w/ finally overclocking my i2500k I've had for over 5 years, and maybe a SSD for my OS and Flight sims. Still going strong :)

Just got an old system of mine back for free ( again ) aka fell into possesion.

Asus P6T WS Revolution, i7-920 A-batch, 6 GB 1600DDR3, Radeon 48xx something ..very old..but got a 680GTX from buddy, 2 x 256GB SSD Samsung 840 Evo ( new ) and a nice Chieftec Big Tower, new fans, new PSU :))

Will need to UP the RAM and may convince my other buddy that I can keep his 680GTX ( he runs 780GTX Ti by now ).

From what I read, the CPU should always do 3.6GHz and if it's a goodie it will see the 4GHz mark on WC. Thinking about a Corsair 120mm AIO...not gonna fit it with DIY WC as that would exceed the limit I wanna put into a 2nd stationary gaming rig ( DCS server or 2nd seat ( wife said she wants to try )).

If I need to give the 680GTX back I will look into a 1060 6GB version

This PC sits in my office for 4y and never got picked up... imagine !!!! paid for and never got picvked up, even bought 2 SSD and new PSU...never came by ..LOL
