How much HMD "resolution improvement" do the Aircraft have?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if that's the right way to ask this, but since there is such a good sale on right now, I'm wondering if I should take advantage and buy more of them.

I'm new to DCS and have been climbing the learning curve at a reasonable pace, helped to some degree by having an older working service/repair/calibration/installing background in avionics from the USAF, and then working for Brackett Field Avionics during the 70's.

My concern is that if I take advantage of the sale and load up on A/C modules, by the time I am reasonably proficient with them, will they still be at a level of ... say a 4K Rift or etc?

I'm thinking they will because the A/C themselves, especially the cockpits look better than the scenery/terrain, but I'm not sure if expecting updates to the A/C themselves will keep pace with the fast track I expect to see with HMDs' image quality over the near future.

Once again ... I'm really not sure if my question is or isn't misdirected, but am interested in some feedback from you guys that are more "graphics savvy"(???) than I am.

I'm running 4K now and the aircraft cockpits certainly look great at that resolution. Nothing missing in that regard. Even the older map terrain of the Caucuses looks stunning at that res and is due to improve in v 2.5. No reason to hold back on that account.

Agreed. Running 4k here as well and the textures in use are equal to the task.

Having re read your post I think I understand what your getting at.

So some thoughts on your questions...I dont run my monitor at 4k and right now I am only flying using the OR CV1.

The display is no where near 4K at the moment, but as you say, in the future the displays will get progressivley better. ( Can't wait ).

I would just say that at the moment some cockpits look better than others in VR. Some instruments will appear clearer than others ( which also depends on what pixel density level you set ).

So it is a little dificult to provide a comprehensive evaluation of each product and how it will perform with a future generation VR product, all I can say is that having flown in VR I couldnt go back to a 2d monitor and can not wait for the future iterations of VR, as it stands at the moment with all its faults and lack of clarity it is ( IMHO ) the greatest advance in simming since the joystick! :joystick:

Thanks Rat, I appreciate the input. :)

I'm really just trying to hedge my bet that if I get all the additional modules, I'll be proficient enough to use them reasonably well before they become VR obsolete as VR gets better, or hope that they get a work-over to meet the coming VR improvements ... which ( IMHO and as inferred in my post) will be fairly soon.

I'm probably waffling too much, and at the savings ... should just get them.

It's not like I'm spending my kids collage fund.

I don't have kids, am retired, and so other than going through the motions ... not inclined to have any. :smilewink:

I was using a 90" LED LCD TV as my monitor before I got my CV1, and even if I had 4K spherical projection system with the motion rig I have coming in a couple of weeks, I don't think I'd swap my CV1 experience for it.

How well the CV1 and DKP motion rig will play together remains to be seen, and is the topic of another thread I stated here, but Yup! ... it's certainly a 'great' time to be simming! :)

Wow, that sounds a great setup. Please share some pics of it when it arrives!

One thing I would add about cockpits. Before I got my CV1 I had the Hawk module and was somewhat underwhelmed with the quality of the cockpit ( even after they had improved it in a recent patch ) when compered to say the A10 or Sabre, however in VR it looks really pretty good. So you can't always directly relate what a cockpit in 2d will look like in VR.

Also, I think you are doing in retirement pretty much what I hope to in a few years

I just realized I made it sound like I have a spherical 4K projection system coming.

That's not right, I have the DKP motion rig coming, and meant to say I would prefer my CV1 to a 4K projection rig, to use with the DKP motion rig I have coming in a couple of weeks.

No matter how you increase the resolution or make a 2D screen completely encircle you, IMHO it just isn't close to 3D VR ... even with the warts and all.

But yeah ... I'm overthinking the "what if" scenarios with respect future VR and what may or may not happen with the modules to keep pace.

I've got until the 26th to take advantage of the sale, so no hurries ... other than missing out on the satisfaction of going to bed at night knowing that I have them out there in my virtual hanger! :smilewink:

Yup ... thanks to things like DCS, VR and etc. I'm living my second childhood quite nicely, as I'm sure you will too!

I have run DCS on a 3 x 30" monitor rig at 7680 resolution, as well as a 130" HD projector screen, and 65" 4K screen. The VR (Vive in my case) has the lowest resolution of all of that, but nothing is as immersive and enjoyable IMO.

Since getting the Vive I've bought more modules than I ever thought I would - or that I can keep up with. These sales are just too tempting - in fact I've only just purchased the Magnificent Eight over the weekend because I enjoy the Huey immensely at current stage. Don't be put off purchasing more now simply because you don't find the time.

I agree that to operate the A/C well requires a lot of practice and study, but that's not the case to simply enjoy them. I just love the fact of being able to climb into the cockpit of something like the F5 and scream across the landscape, even if I don't have a first clue on how to run the various systems.

I doubt that the evolution of the VR headset hardware will make the current A/C modules any less enjoyable - probably quite to the contrary. Pick 'em up while they're on sale and enjoy them at your own pace - no rush.

Yeah, I really wish the F5 was on sale too.

When I was in the USAF the T38 Talon version was called "The Sports Car of the Air Force" sort of like the OH-6 Cayuse being called the sports car of helis.

I guess ED knew it's just too cool to put on sale yet, and it's temptation will whittle down any resistance.

They should'a called it the Borg!

Anyway, I just completed the order I listed above and will totally blame it on you guys when my better half questions the hit on the plastic. :smartass:
