UWBuRn Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 I'm having a problem with my FC CD... this morning i removed it from the CD drive and while i was placing it in its case i noticed a crack in the middle of the disk, starting from the hole. In fact i've already saw it something like a week ago but at the beginning i taught that was just a scratch, and being in the non written part of the CD i didn't cared very much. Unfortunately now the crack has grown and windows doesn't recognize the CD anymore (after i saw the lenght of the crack i tried to place the CD in the drive again to see if it was working again). I bought the CD on Simware, should i contact them for a substitution or should i get in touch with ED by mail? Thansk in advance. PS This is the nice part of StarForce, neglecting the users the right of making a backup copy in case of media support failure
Force_Feedback Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY THE CD AGAIN!!! It will shatter and mess up your drive. As for the support, well, I don't have a clue, but if my FC CD cracks (it's russian, lol), then I won't care, as I too have a dl version :/ Can't really help you any further, but please don't attempt to play the cd, for your optical drive's sake. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Pilotasso Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 I always let the CD loose in the box just to prevent this. The CD's are of crappy plastic quality. .

Yeah, i won't attemp anymore also because is useless; anyway at the moment it doesn't look like it will broke completely if readed again.
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Yup, its an unfortunate side-effect of the layering of a CD. These cracks are often actually caused by the jewel case they are in. There are many jewel cases which exert WAY TOO MUCH radial force with their spindles on the spindle hole of the CD. This causes tiny cracks, which soon grow to large ones with repeated use of the CD. Has anyone had any success with stop-drilling a CD crack before it reaches the readable media? Granted, it'd have to be a very small drill bit, probably in a pin vise, but it might actually work if caught early enough. Also, I would think that the publisher of your disc might have a warranty which covers the media itself. You might try looking into that.
UWBuRn Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 Mmm, dunno, maybe using a slower cd drive would produce less vibrations... also storing the disk in a normal cd case and not in the one that come with it (my JW case in fact has a very strong spindle) would help preventing the worn of the disk. Anyway that's why backup copy should exist. Where i live (Italy) selling software dnying the user the possibility of making one backup copy of the support where the software is stored is also illegal, anyway i doubt this will change ED policy about the SF copy protection. BTW, i've just mailed simw requesting a substitution, let's see what is their answer.
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Not likely, Pilotasso. Do you remember your early days of building plastic model airplanes? Remember what happened when you used model cement or even super glue to attach the canopy to the fuselage? I'm pretty sure that would destroy the optical characteristics of the CD. :smilewink:
Ardillita Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Remember what happened to "mith busters" when playin cds at 30000 RPM? :P
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Hehehe...yeah...Buster got smoked. IIRC, some pieces of the silver disc were embedded at fatal depths in his ballistics gel body. Scary stuff. :(
UWBuRn Posted October 17, 2006 Author Posted October 17, 2006 Got now the reply from simware and they are telling me that they can't substitute my CD... Who should i contact to get a backup for this CD? Can ED do something about this?

Scary stuff. :( Lol who in their right mind would play a cd at 30k rpms? I was more impressed with the "shooting into water" episode.
